Dundee United romped to a first derby win at Tannadice in five years with a dominant display against city rivals Dundee.

The victory was Jim Goodwin's side's fourth home win in a row - a run last achieved in 2014 - and consolidated them in seventh place in the Scottish Premiership.

Dundee, meanwhile, failed to win their first post-split fixture for the third time in eight seasons and remain in danger of falling into the relegation play-off scrap.

Will Ferry was fortunate to open the scoring for United when Zac Sapsford's deflected shot cannoned off his knee and trickled in off a post.

Iurie Iovu denied Dundee an almost certain equaliser a few minutes later, heading Luke Graham's cushioned volley over his own crossbar when it looked destined for the back of the net.

Joe Westley thought he had levelled for Dundee shortly before the break but, following an onfield review, his brave header was ruled out for a shirt pull on United's Ross Graham inside the box.

With 20 minutes to play, United took control - Ferry unleashing a strike from outside the box which, like his first, kissed the inside of the far post before finding the net.

Spurred on, Ferry dug out a fabulous cross to the back post where Ryan Strain was waiting to plant a header into the back of the net to make it 3-0 and secure all three points.

With St Mirren and Kilmarnock both losing this weekend, Dundee remain five points clear of the relegation zone while United are still seventh, seven points above Aberdeen in eighth.

While United were perhaps fortunate in the manner of the opening goal, they had been the dominant side in the early stages. They had 11 shots, three of which were on target, and three big chances in the first 45 minutes.

Goodwin's side were also a little lucky that Westley's potential equaliser was ruled out as Dundee had started to find a foothold in the game. But the second half was a different story, much of that thanks to Ferry.

Not only did he score twice, he set up the third. The wing-back created three chances and sent in five crosses, the highest of any United player in both metrics.

His 0.76 xG was the highest of anyone on the pitch and his goals came from his only two shots on target. His first marked the third game in a row that he has scored the opener, while his assist for Strain's header was his sixth in the league.

With one year left on his deal, he is likely to be in demand over the summer.

For Dundee, it was bad news in their fight for survival. They had more possession, more passes, and more corners but failed to make any of that count.

While they may feel aggrieved by their disallowed goal, that is now 15 of their 34 league games in which they have failed to score. Only relegation rivals St Mirren have failed to score more often in the Premiership this season.

They managed 10 shots across the 90 minutes at Tannadice, but only four were on target, and generated an xG of 0.85 compared to United's 2.18.

The one positive for Steven Pressley is that St Mirren and Kilmarnock both lost on Saturday so they remain above the danger zone for the moment.

Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin: "The all-round performance and the result is what matters most but I thought we thoroughly deserved the victory.

"Great credit to the group, they made amends for the disappointment six weeks ago. I thought we were the better team in every area of the pitch and I was delighted to send our fans home happy.

"We want to finish this season on a positive note and we expect another four performances like that one today."

Dundee manager Steven Pressley: "The game itself I thought there was very little in it in the first half.

"In the second half we didn't manage to impose ourselves on the game and put them under pressure. Ultimately they ran away 3-0 winners and deservedly so.

"It was difficult conditions but for two weeks we've known that, we've prepared for that so there's no excuse from myself or the group. We didn't manage to find the solutions or the answers."

What's next for these teams?

Dundee are at home to St Mirren on Saturday, 2 May (15:00 BST) while United travel to Kilmarnock at the same time.
