They [Arsenal] have got unfinished business in the Champions League.

He [Odegaard] wants to be the first captain of Arsenal to lift that trophy.

You would not back against them winning it based on what we've seen them do in this competition in the past two seasons, but he 100% takes Arsenal to a different level when he is on form and playing like this.

That's the way it should be as well. I think when he is at his best, Arsenal are at their best.

I think there have been times when he's not been at his best and as a team they can still look good and win games, but the best version of Arsenal in my opinion comes when Odegaard is pulling the strings, because so many other players will be involved in the way they attack, and the way they attack will look different at certain points.

Martin Odegaard's excellent start to the season continued as the Arsenal captain came to his side's rescue against Napoli in Naples.

The Gunners were guilty of wasteful finishing and were heading for a frustrating draw in their first game in the Champions League since losing last season's final in agonising fashion.

However, Odegaard had Arsenal's 1,500 travelling fans celebrating after a fine finish from outside the box - the captain's fourth goal in five games, including the Community Shield.

Piero Hincapie dropped to his knees after the full-time whistle and thumped the ground with his hands in relief at the result.

Arsenal won all eight group phase games on their way to last season's final, and they are up and running after a fine win in Italy.

Mikel Arteta's side had missed three great chances to punish last season's Serie A runners-up before Odegaard's winner.

There were 29 passes in the build-up to Arsenal's winner, their second-most on record (since 2003-04) for a Champions League goal (33 for Lucas Perez's second at Basel in December 2016).

Arsenal registered 26 attempts - their highest total in a single match in the Champions League since the start of last season.

It was another strong Champions League night for the Premier League- four of the five teams have banked wins already.

Paris St‑Germain and La Liga champions Barcelona also had good evenings after they both eased through their opening tests.

Sporting began their Champions League campaign by coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory over Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray.

The hosts fell behind in the opening five minutes as captain Goncalo Ignacio bundled goalkeeper Rui Silva's save over his own goal line.

Sporting striker Luis Suarez thought he had levelled soon after when he slotted home but it was disallowed for offside.

Just moments after the disallowed goal, Sporting found their equaliser with Geny Catamo pinging a half-volley into the bottom corner from 14 yards.

Perhaps flattered by the level scoreline at the break, Sporting turned it on in the second half.

The Portuguese side won a penalty as Suarez went around goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir before he was clipped by Ismail Jakobs.

After a long video assistant referee check to confirm the decision, Suarez planted the spot-kick into the bottom corner for the lead.

Six minutes later, the points were secured by Sporting - who netted their third goal from just their fifth effort.

Rodrigo Zalazar scored the pick of the bunch by curling a free-kick into the top corner from 22 yards out.

Ermedin Demirovic's 12-minute first-half hat-trick earned Stuttgart victory in a thrilling match against Champions League debutants Viking.

The forward opened the scoring on 20 minutes, lashing into the roof of the net from close range from Angelo Stiller's cut-back.

Norwegian champions Viking had started the game well and quickly equalised, captain Zlatko Tripic slotting home two minutes later.

But Bosnia-Herzegovina international Demirovic quickly restored his side's lead with a simple finish from Deniz Undav's pinpoint pass.

The pair then combined again on 32 minutes with Demirovic chesting down Undav's pass and striking sweetly on the volley to net his third.

There was a video assistant referee intervention with questions over whether Demirovic had handled the ball and goalkeeper Arild Ostbo will perhaps think he could have done better, but it ultimately proved enough to secure the three points.

Viking were positive after the break as Stuttgart went for a more defensive approach but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.

Things will get no easier for the Stavanger-based side as they welcome German champions Bayern Munich in their first home match of the campaign next week.

Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick as Paris St-Germain got their Champions League title defence off to a winning start against Slovan Bratislava.

Spanish World Cup winner Torres joined from Barcelona in the summer and made an impact on his European debut for the French club, adding three goals after Ousmane Dembele had put the hosts in control with two goals in six first-half minutes.

Ballon d'Or winner Dembele got PSG off the mark after 17 minutes, slotting home the rebound after Nuno Mendes' ferocious effort crashed off the post.

Slovan, who are managed by former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, were punished for playing out from the back six minutes later as Dembele headed in from Dro Fernandez's deflected cross.

The scorer of the opening two goals then turned provider for his new team-mate, lifting a teasing cross into the six-yard box and leaving Torres with a tap-in at the near post.

Torres scored his second two minutes after the break, lashing home brilliantly after a clever run and lay-off by Maghnes Akliouche, and then completed his hat-trick when he turned in Dembele's corner from inside a packed penalty box.

Suleiman Camara added a consolation goal for the visitors, drifting into the six-yard box and shifting on to his right foot before unleashing into the top corner.

Fabian Ruiz added gloss late in the game though, drilling into the far corner in a much-needed performance from PSG, who have yet to win a game in Ligue 1 this season, drawing twice and lost once.

They are in unfamiliar territory, sitting 13th in the French league, but such an emphatic win in Europe will surely give them confidence that a Champions League three-peat is possible.

Raphinha continued his remarkable goalscoring start to the season with another double as Barcelona turned on the style against Feyenoord in the Champions League.

In-form Raphinha produced an outrageous moment of skill to take out two opponents before calmly stroking his side into a third-minute lead.

Barcelona doubled their lead through Karim Adeyemi's 20-yard curling finish into the top right corner, which the summer recruit from Borussia Dortmund celebrated with a trademark back-flip celebration.

Barcelona's third came when Raphinha fired across the keeper in the 57th minute after a well-timed run - his eighth goal of the campaign and the third time in five games he has scored twice.

Free-scoring Barcelona added a fourth with Lamine Yamal's 77th-minute free-kick, but they are still seeking a first clean sheet in the competition since April 2025 after substitute Sem Steijn grabbed an 82nd-minute consolation.

Barca added a fifth through Gabriel Jesus, who arrived from Arsenal at the start of the month and headed in his new team's 22nd goal in five games this season.

Night two of the opening Champions League season turned the dial up again, with more goals than Tuesday and another pair of wins for Premier League teams.

Alexis Mac Allister did his contract renewal hopes no harm at all with a goal in Liverpool’s victory against Atletico, and Martin Odegaard struck to preserve Arsenal’s 100% start to the season.
