Hibernian head coach David Gray tells BBC Scotland: "Again there's real frustration, disappointment and anger.

"The reaction I was looking for, I certainly didn't get in the first half and St Johnstone didn't have to work too hard to score two goals.

"Off the back of the disappointment of Thursday [home defeat to Hearts], and probably because of our how second half was, and the reaction I got at half-time, you were hoping that would come in to today. In the first half there was a real lack of intent and aggression.

"Second half, we huffed and puffed but I'm certainly not going to be making excuses for how we started that game."

On criticism aimed at the manager, Gray added: "It should be aimed at the manager.

"You get paid to win games of football and I think if you've not won you come under criticism, That's what you sign up for as a manager. I won't shy away from that responsibility, it will drive me on to work harder."

Not for the first time this season, Hibs boss David Gray is lamenting a weak first half showing.

St Johnstone head coach Simo Valakari tells BBC Scotland: "You have to play to your strengths, we've built up the team to play this way. It would be very stupid and naive to move away from our style because it is our strength to play this way. But at the same time we need to be able to hide our weaknesses.

"Today, in the second half, we didn't want to go that deep and defend our box but we needed to do it to get the result.

"They are a very good Hibs side. We needed something concrete to back up our performances, that's why this feels like a big result.

"We worked so hard last season to come up to the Premiership and play these matches. We want to compete, there's no better place than against the reigning champions [Celtic midweek]. It's a big task but a task we can go and see what we can do.

Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken tells BBC Scotland: "First half was not good enough, we were looking at what was happening instead of taking it on. That's not who we want to be. There was not enough guts on the ball.

"One ball in behind, it's not possible to defend like this on one long ball. That's all we gave away, they didn't create another decent chance.

"Second half, I was happy with the reaction. We were in the duels, had quality on the ball, pressed and dominated them. They were defending the result.

"We were patient, tried to get the ball round them. We had to be faster in these moments, but we showed conviction. We never gave up, we kept pushing and got what we deserved."

Dundee are likely to be without captain Simon Murray for most of the season, so today's casualties are going to stretch the squad further.

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley tells BBC Scotland: "It was a really difficult to manage because of the injuries we sustained, and the sending off.

"New players were blowing, lacking fitness, they need to time to adjust to our ways. It was a really challenging game.

"We think Joe Westley could have a fractured cheekbone, which is a hammer blow. Fin Robertson looks like he's hurt the outside of his knee. We don't know the extent of it yet but we're a little fearful. Ryan Finnigan had to go off with an ankle injury, we're more hopeful on that.

"And the sending off as well... Wow!

"The one thing is, the players have a never-say-die attitude. They were incredible, they kept going and going through adversity. In the end, we nearly got an outstanding result."

There was a lot of doom and gloom over the summer with Derek McInnes, Lawrence Shankland, Cammy Devlin - even the set-piece coach - leaving.

The manager comes in, with difficult Champions League games, and virtually a whole new team. It took time to settle.

A lot of people made a judgement early on, on this programme (Sportsound), but they've been proven wrong.

The manager has been really good, his substitutions have been wonderful. This team will only get better, but the main thing is patience.

Everything will take time. They overshot the runway by a country mile last season. It'll take three or four or five years to get to where they want to be.

St Johnstone have a chance to make that three in a row at McDiarmid Park when champions Celtic visit on Wednesday.

Rangers host St Mirren in the other midweek match.

A very good few days for Hearts, while Hibs have lost a lot of ground in a short space of time.

St Johnstone will be happy after winning their first two home games on their return to the top flight.

Hearts' penalty-scorer Claudio Braga tells BBC Scotland: "First half we were not ourselves in some ways. We talked at half time, we needed to improve for sure. We know what we can do, we've already proved that.

"It shows character, but of course there's relief because we want to win. We showed more personality, we weren't afraid to make mistakes.

"In some moments in the first half, we weren't dropping enough to get the ball. There was less space because of that. Second half, we rotated a lot, asked for the ball a lot. The more we attacked, the more we created chances and the confidence comes with that.

"Everyone is a little bit tired. There's been a lot of games but it's for a good reason - we're in European competitions. We just need to deal with it, we play football for a living!"

The Dundee dressing room will be a disconsolate place.

The visitors put an awful lot into the match, taking an early lead and battling so hard to preserve it.

Joe Westley and Finlay Robertson were carried off on stretchers, with Ryan Finnigan also going off injured, while Zan Besir was sent off for an ugly challenge late in the game.

A deserved win for St Johnstone...

Mitchell, Diabate and Steward were fantastic, defended really well, put their bodies on the line.

They had to hang on a little bit at the end.

A lot of things are in the right place. They just need to keep going.

St Johnstone fans are realistic. This is a bonus win for them and they'll be looking to pick up more points like this at home.

It was a bit scruffy from Hearts but they finally found a way to break down Dundee resistance.
