Adam Idah's double takes him to six Swansea goals in his first season at the club

Swansea City ended the Championship season with victory as substitute Adam Idah's late double and a sparkling Leo Walta free-kick secured a 3-1 triumph over Charlton Athletic.

A forgettable goalless draw between two sides with little to play for had looked on the cards until Idah met Josh Key's pass with a crisp first-time finish to put Swansea in front 16 minutes from time.

Charlton responded swiftly as another substitute, Miles Leaburn, headed home from Sonny Carey's corner.

But Nathan Jones' team were only level for three minutes before 19-year-old academy product Thomas Woodward – who had only just come on for his senior debut – centred for Idah to steer home his second with the aid of a deflection off MacAulay Gillesphey.

January signing Walta put a layer of gloss on Swansea's triumph as he scored a memorable first goal for the club, a curling effort from 25 yards which bounced into net off the post.

Victory sees Swansea finish the season in 11th for the second successive season, though the Welsh club are three points better off than they were this time last year.

Charlton end 2025-26 in 19th, their highest finishing position in the EFL pyramid in 11 years, despite ending the campaign with only one win in their final nine games.

Swansea lost only one of their final seven games this season

Swansea began 2025-26 with play-off ambitions, only for relegation concerns to emerge in the autumn as they lost their way under Alan Sheehan.

Vitor Matos has masterminded a significant upturn in fortunes since taking charge in November to secure a fifth successive mid-table Championship finish, with Swansea heading into the summer – once again – hoping to take strides forward in the next campaign.

Charlton are eyeing progress, too, having achieved their primary goal for the season by securing Championship status for another season after spending the previous five years in League One.

It is Swansea who go into the summer with greater momentum, having continued their impressive home form thanks to this late flourish.

Idah's goals were a welcome boost for the Republic of Ireland international, who has played second fiddle to Championship top scorer Zan Vipotnik during an injury-hit first season in Wales.

Vipotnik missed the chance to add to his 25 club goals this season when he shot too close to Thomas Kaminski in a low-key first half, before Idah grabbed the headlines in the closing stages.

With a summer of speculation about Vipotnik's future on the cards, Idah's contribution may serve as a reminder to Swansea's hierarchy that they already have another decent centre-forward option on their books.

Vitor Matos: Nice way to finish season

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos:

"I think it's a game that we knew we needed to grow into the game. It's a good team who knows how to fight.

"They have a really competitive spirit, long balls, second ball, they are really aggressive on all of this, so we need to have the patience to grow into the game, staying concentrated, work step by step, then in the end there will be an opening.

"That's what we did. Sometimes we could do it with a little bit more speed, but more than that I think was the importance of controlling with the ball while staying balanced as well.

"It was a good way to finish the season, of course, with a lot of good performances collectively and individually."

Charlton manager Nathan Jones:

"Disappointing really. We understand where we have come form and what we are and we are getting th maximum out of this group.

"This group is working hard every day, grafting. We are behind teams in terms of talent, quality, man for man.

"We weren't aggressive early on. We looked tired. Then we did change and looked like we could do something, it was decisions, turning the ball over. As soon as we turned it over, it looked like we could concede.

"That was the risk and reward we had to do. We have to get better, we know that. We have to get better on every single level."
