    I saw Kusal Mendis whack England around Bengaluru during the dismal 2023 World Cup. I feel like I watched him play a lot of these shots where he squats low, uses the pace and lifts the ball over the leg side.

    With Josh Tongue pace, this flies all of the way for six and is dropped in the crowd.

    I'll reiterate, this is a good pitch. Sri Lanka will need plenty of runs.

    The moment Kusal Mendis settles down, and he gets a few runs, his hands will work a lot better.

    If you're not careful and you're not proactive, Sri Lanka will get a good score on the board.

    On Tuesday, Jacks spoke about his emergency appendix operation last month. He was in Edinburgh for his mum's 60th but ended up being rushed to hospital.

    England's quicks averaged just 0.35° of swing and 0.43° of seam movement in the opening 10 overs - the third lowest combined movement for the first innings of an ODI in England since 2006.

    That news is tempered slightly by the impressive performance of debutant Sachin Colombage on Tuesday. He stepped up as main spinner in Hasaranga's absence and was really impressive.

    Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is heading home after experiencing lower back pain during a practice session.

    Hasaranga experienced the discomfort prior to the first one-day international on Tuesday.

    The 29-year-old, who played in all three of the T20 internationals that preceded this series, will play no further part on this tour.

    The ball with the wobble seam, somehow it has got a bit of movement.

    Pathum Nissanka knew he was gone. Three fours and a six for Nissanka in his 25 runs.

    That is a delivery he puts away, that's his bread and butter, but for some reason he just missed it.

    That is what pressure feels for you.

    It's actually only umpire's call on leg stump with Gus Atkinson nipping the ball back but that's good enough for England. It looked out and so it proved.

    England have their breakthrough.

    That single proved Russel's point. That's the first time there has been two singles in one over. Eight singles have come across seven different overs.

    The area Sri Lanka struggle with is rotation of strike and getting a bit of rhythm, and it is the singles which allow you to do that.

    A beautiful shot by Pathum Nissanka. Again, this tells you how the pitch is playing.

    Good length, and Pathum Nissanka leans on it past backward point.

    England's bowlers have got to change their expectations.

    It's a bouncy surface here. The length you need to hit the stumps may also be too full. Pathum Nissanka guides another one, this time getting it through the off side for four. As with the previous overs, the boundary is followed by a run of dots.

    Across the opening seven overs of the innings, England have bowled only three deliveries projected to hit the stumps.
