Ben Stokes sharing a joke with Brendon McCullum on the balcony. Presumably about the timing of the wicket.

Plenty to reflect on during the tea interval.

I'll leave you in the capable hands of Mike Peter for the tea break and into the evening session.

    Well, that's tea.

There were 23 overs, 54 runs and four wickets in that session.

    One talking point, though.

Thank you for everything Stokesy. Your presence helped England so much. We’ll all remember Headingly 2019. Keep your head high skipper.

Wow.....that is a massive decision and one that creates a huge headache for England for the rest of this Summer. But totally respect the decision of one of the best all-rounders England has ever had.

    Ben Stokes is... inevitable.

  6. 'I've got one more trip to do'published at 15:40 BST

England captain Ben Stokes, in a video released by the ECB: "There’s something that I know is going to happen over the next two days which is going to be that this is my last two days as your captain and my last two days representing England.

"Reasons can wait, [in terms of] why, but I’ve had many trips to the well before for this team, for you boys and for people beforehand. And I’ve got one more trip to do.

"And the only thing that I ask please, is that everyone please does the same. We’ve got a lot of hard work still to do and the only thing that I want is to be able to walk off that field, regardless of the result, knowing that I’ve had this group of men - and one lady - give everything for the last two days.

"The only thing I want is just for everyone to give it everything, not only for me selfishly, but also for the team and everything else that we’ve got going forward for you blokes.

"All the taps on the behind, all the emotion, all that kind of stuff - please can we just wait for the end of the game because we’ve still got a load of work to do and I’ve got a load more work that I want to do.

"Let’s just go out there and give absolutely everything for another two days, alright? That’s my only intention and that’s where all my energy is right now. Got the emotional side out of the way but now it’s time to go to work and everyone else please just come with me."

Almost, in a way, I hope that ends up being Ben Stokes' last Test wicket.

    I can't believe it. I'm absolutely stunned.

Clearly, the [nightclub] incident hasn't helped and relationships have been fractured in some nature.

I need time to take all that in, we'll have to hear from Ben himself and the reasons why.

I didn't think I would be reading this out today. Ben Stokes has announced his retirement. It's seems extraordinary timing, he has another game and series to win. I wonder why he has announced it now?

He has brought the crowd to their feet. He is waving and applauding to the round.

  10. NZ 225-8published at 82 overs

The news is just sinking in, I think, as Ben Stokes completes his over with three dots and a single for new batter Ben Sears.

I just wonder about what has gone on over the past week or so, and maybe his mind just woke up one morning and went, "you know what, I've had enough of all this."

But he's clearly still bowling well enough, isn't he?

There is something very Botham-esque about that.

The first ball that Ben Stokes his delivered since announcing his retirement, he takes a wicket. Some people have their scrips written for them and they are beyond the relms of the rest of us and Ben Stokes is one of them. Where did that come from?!

WHO WRITES THE SCRIPTS FOR BEN STOKES?

The crowd at Trent Bridge has just got wind of the news as Ben Stokes began his latest over during one of those marathon spells.

They cheer him on as he runs in and Stokes gets the wicket with his very first ball since the news broke.

Zak Foulkes drives with his feet in the crease and Harry Brook takes the catch at second slip.

He roars before running off in celebration.

The crowd at Trent Bridge go berserk.

I wonder what the reaction from the Trent Bridge crowd will be when news filters through.

With the players out on the field, some pretty dramatic news coming out of the ECB.

Ben Stokes, the England Test captain since 2022, has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of this Test.

The 35-year-old announced his decision to his team-mates in the Trent Bridge dressing room today.

Stokes is playing in his 122nd Test, and he also featured in 114 ODIs, winning the World Cup in 2019, plus 43 T20s.

We'll have plenty of reaction to this story over the next few hours, no doubt.

Ben Stokes continues. He's putting his body through the wringer here.

An absolute peach of a delivery to Zak Foulkes from the penultimate ball of the over, wide of the crease which just misses the outside edge.

Stokes throws his head back in frustration.
