Ian Ridley's 'A Breath Of Sadness'. About finding joy through grief via county cricket after the passing of his wife. Reminds us that there are bigger things than our game, but that also our game can teach us about the bigger things in life. Simply beautiful!

For nonfiction cricket writing, Wisden each year has no equal. We’re on the 163rd edition, and it keeps getting better. I couldn’t do without my little yellow Bible each spring.

  2. NZ 206-6published at 68 overs

A decent effort from England in the afternoon session so far.

New Zealand's lead is 290 now so we're edging towards a record Test run chase at this venue.

England will be pleased to see the back of Mitchell Santner because he is that kind of player.

Ben Stokes might need to get the wax syringed from his ears.

A clear nick shown on UltraEdge off the bat of Mitchell Santer to a delivery from the England skipper just outside off.

Jamie Smith, standing back, took it and played his part by persuading Stokes to review that one.

England think Mitchell Santner has possibly nicked Ben Stokes into the gloves of Jamie Smith.

Ball goes close to the bat.

Stokes took some persuading to review it.

Daryl Mitchell is known as New Zealand's man for a sticky spot.

He brings up his half-century off a single off Ben Stokes.

It's come off 170 balls which gives an indication of his grit.

He did well to catch that.

I wasn't totally convinced but then he managed to balance himself.

    Blundell c Gay b Archer 18 (NZ 204-5)

Short. Hooked. Caught at deep square.

It's a short-pitched delivery from Jofra Archer and Tom Blundell decides to take it on but his execution is a bit top-edgey.

Emilio Gay has a little bit of a tricky catch on the boundary edge but he manages to cling on tumbling backwards.

    England have their fifth wicket.

  9. NZ 200-4published at 66.1 overs

Tom Blundell nicks the first ball of Jofra Archer's 16th over wide of the diving Jacob Bethell at gully.

Close for England but not close enough. The ball races away through the third region for four.

A total of 59 runs through third in this innings.

I've loved watching Daryl Mitchell bat because it's been such a challenge for him. He'll be battered and bruised when he gets back to the hotel.

  11. NZ 196-4published at 66 overs

Ben Stokes is bowling wide of the crease, angling it into Daryl Mitchell.

A big appeal from Stokes after his fifth ball nips back into Mitchell and hits him on the top of the pad.

It's an appeal laced with desperation, if we're honest. Way too high.

If you were listening to the TMS lunch discussion then you'll know 2026 is the National Year of Reading, the biggest campaign in a generation designed to help more people to discover or rediscover the joy of reading.

The theme is to “go all in” on passions and interests and when it comes to a tradition of writing about a sport cricket has a rich and varied history.

From the iconic Beyond a Boundary by CLR James to Harry Thompson’s Penguins Stopped Play. From Duncan Hamilton’s biography of Harold Larwood to the groundbreaking autobiography of Marcus Trescothick Coming Back to Me.

We had a bit of a chat on Friday in this live on cricket in fiction, let's talk about your preferred cricketing non-fiction today. Any recommendations?

  13. NZ 195-4published at 65 overs

Tom Blundell calmly guides a brisk-ish delivery from Jofra Archer through wide third for four to start Jofra Archer's latest over.

There's a single before Archer responds with four dots.

A hum from the Trent Bridge crowd, doubtless pondering tactics.

If England are going to go about the chase in the way Harry Brook warmed up this morning, it's going to be a hell of a watch. For good or bad.

  15. NZ 190-4published at 64 overs

Ben Stokes backs up that over from Jofra Archer with another tight one. Just a single off it. England are chipping away at New Zealand here. Who will blink first?

Sat here trying to explain cricket to my three-year-old. Man without helmet throws balls at man with helmet who tries to hit it. If he hits it badly he has to go home, is what we've grasped so far.

  17. NZ 189-4published at 63 overs

Jofra Archer continues to build a bit of pressure for England with a tight over.

He finishes with a couple of beauties - twice beating tentative defensive prods from Daryl Mitchell on the outside edge.

England have done well with the ball after lunch thus far.

They are New Zealand's second-most successful batting pair in Tests since 2021. This will be a crucial partnership for both sides in the context of the match.

This will be troubling England's batters considering what is to come.

A full delivery from Ben Stokes midway through the over pea rolls through to Tom Bundell, who jabs his bat down but misses it.

The ball beat wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, too, and runs away for four byes.
