It was so low, all you could do really was jam your fingers down on it.

The umpires were immediately sure it wasn't caught. Tom Blundell was sure he was out though, he'd already walked to the rope.

  5. Blundell survivespublished at 55.1 overs

    Ball has indeed touched turf.

A valiant effort by James Rew but the ball, in the tips of glove, skids along the turf.

    Tom Blundell survives.

    This would be a bonus.

It's one of those that's tricky because his fingers were pointing down. Could be a ripper of a catch this.

  7. Umpire reviewpublished at 55.1 overs

James Rew dived brilliantly to his right and was pretty much at full length.

Hang on...is there some grass on this?

What a catch that is by Rew if it's carried.

  9. Umpire reviewpublished at 55.1 overs

Has Tom Blundell been strangled down the leg side by Josh Tongue?

James Rew appears to have taken the catch cleanly - Blundell starts to walk off - but the umpires want a check.

  10. NZ 207-5published at 55 overs

Glenn Phillips starts to free his arms.

Short, wide and pretty average from Sonny Baker with his fourth delivery and Phillips flaps it through the covers for four.

Baker then serves up a juicy half volley which Phillips smears through extra cover for consecutive boundaries.

  12. NZ 196-5published at 54 overs

Glenn Phillips is the new batter and he is off the mark with a deft opening of the faceto Josh Tongue which allows the ball to race away through third for four.

    Nicely played.

Sonny Baker picks up a well deserved wicket and England get exactly what they need here. The dangerous Daryl Mitchell who we've seen bat for really long periods of time, has gone.

Horribly mistimed. Daryl Mitchell trying to play the pull shot but it's a very easy catch for Emilio Gay.

    WICKETpublished at 52.5 overs

    Mitchell c Gay b Baker 44 (NZ 188-5)

Daryl Mitchell miscues a pull off a short ball from Sonny Baker. That delivery rushed the Kiwi batter a little.

The ball spoons up off the splice to give Emilio Gay a simple catch at short mid-wicket.

Baker punches the air and roars in celebration.

Just what England wanted after tea.

Both sides will be happy with their work. This next session could decide who comes out on top though.

  17. NZ 184-4published at 52 overs

Tom Blundell attempts to shoulder arms to a delivery wide of off stump from Josh Tongue, but the ball slides off the face of his upended bat and races through third for four.

There is nothing accidental about Blundell's next shot, though, as he neatly clips a fuller delivery through mid-wicket for four.

Final ball of the over and Bundell unfurls a booming drive to one which swings away prompting gasps from England's fielders.

10% of all New Zealand's century partnerships in Tests in England have come from Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell.

  19. NZ 176-4published at 51 overs

Sonny Baker with his idiosyncratic hop, skip and jump at the start of his run up is trusted with the second over after tea.

Daryl Mitchell finds fresh air with a drive outside of off stump which perks up England's slip cordon.

Later in the over, though, Baker drops it a bit short and Mitchell swivels on his heels and pulls him through mid-wicket for four.

I think New Zealand have fought back nicely with this partnership but England will be happy with four wickets on a pitch that's very good.
