Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. NZ 271-6published at 71 overs

Glenn Phillips guides the second ball of Jofra Archer's over out to backward point for four, ending a run of 27 consecutive dot balls delivered to him by the England seamer.

Archer plants one on Phillips' turned shoulder with his following delivery, and the New Zealand batter can't score off the rest of the over - all short balls.

Most probably the end of Jofra Archer today - he has figures of 1-48 from 17 overs today, with four maidens.

  2. NZ 267-6published at 70 overs

Jacob Bethell rattles through a maiden to Nathan Smith.

He'll be happy to be at the non-striker's end for the next over, because Jofra Archer is going to steam in again...

Glenn Phillips found that short-ball barrage a lot funnier than I would have.

Jofra Archer gets a big cheer down at deep square leg. That’s probably the end of his spell. Plenty of effort and threat without nabbing that wicket.

  4. NZ 267-6published at 67 overs

Time for more short stuff from Jofra Archer.

Glenn Phillips, still in shades, is getting peppered again - he twice hits the deck, dropping to his knees the first time and then dramatically falling forward, then landing on his back after the last ball of the over.

He sticks his thumb to either show he's alright, or perhaps in appreciation of Archer's bowling.

A maiden, although Archer fired one down the leg side for four byes that won't count against his figures.

That was Jacob Bethell's fifth Test wicket.

  7. NZ 263-6published at 68 overs

Nathan Smith arrives at number eight.

Jacob Bethell strikes his pad with the final ball of the over and goes up for a big appeal... nothing from the umpire.

The first over of spin of the series ends with just the one wicket.

It came off the inside edge of the bat, it's a great catch by Root. I can't believe Blundell has done that. He's probably thinking the same.

It's a good pitch where you'd expect at least one of your top six to go out there and get 100. There's hardly any movement.

It wasn't a particulaly good ball but it was not a bad catch actually, above his head. Root was the main man there really.

That was another gift really. There's been some soft dismissals today.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 67.4 overs

    Blundell c Root b Bethell 51 (NZ 263-6)

    51 and out!

Jacob Bethell's part-time spin takes a wicket in its first over.

Two balls after reaching his half-century, Tom Blundell chips a ball to short mid-wicket, where Joe Root parries the ball in the air at the top of his leap and then takes it comfortably on the way down.

New Zealand have chucked a few wickets away today.

That is the first half century by a New Zealand batsman in this series.

I can't imagine that they'll be a great amount of spin, first day at the Oval. Hopefully Jacob Bethell can find some sway though.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Tom Blundellpublished at 67.2 overs

    NZ 263-5

    There's Tom Blundell's half-century!

England bring Jacob Bethell into the attack for the first time with some left-arm spin.

His second ball is a drag down and Blundell dispatches it behind square for four, bringing up the landmark from 82 balls.

Who knew putting on some sunglasses could get things going? The crowd is as involved as it has been all day.

Jofra Archer has all of a sudden woken up in this session. He's sparked up, there's aggression.

It's good to finally see some hostility from him.

  16. NZ 259-5published at 67 overs

    And now a catching chance?

James Rew sprawls to take the ball down the leg side, as he's had to a fair bit today, and he and Jofra Archer go up for a caught behind off Glenn Phillips.

A pause from the umpire... who then signals a no ball.

The technology shows that it didn't touch anything anyway.

Of all the deliveries Phillips has played the worst, it's been the first one with the sunglasses on.

    Not many bat in sunglasses...

  19. ouch!

    NZ 258-5published at 66.3 overs

Oooof, Jofra Archer's landed one on Glenn Phillips.

The New Zealand batter had donned sunglasses under his helmet earlier in the over and maybe that's why he didn't pick Archer's bouncer.

He tried to sway out of way and the ball clipped his right shoulder.

I'd carry on with the short ball tactic if Blundell is taking it on.

New Zealand can't afford another mistake after Mitchell handed them that other one.
