Betty the 97-year-old wing walker raises £4,350 for charity

The world's oldest female wing-walker has earned a round of applause from the staff at the hospital she fundraised for.

Betty Bromage's most recent wing-walking stunt made the news after it earned her a Guinness World Record.

It was all for a good cause as she was raising money for Cheltenham General Hospital's stroke unit.

She delivered a cheque for £4,350 on Wednesday to the unit, who treated her in August last year.

"They cared for me very, very well, and it was my way of showing appreciation," she said.

Despite Betty's heroic efforts, she was surprised when she received a round of applause from staff at the unit.

"It was absolutely amazing. Gobsmacked is the expression. I don't know what I've done to deserve it, really," Betty said.

"What an amazing challenge, Betty's an absolute inspiration to us all," said Richard Smith, associate director of Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.

Dr Kate Hellier, consultant stroke physician at Cheltenham Hospital, said Betty had "brought a great deal of joy to staff".

Betty says there's no stopping her, saying she'd wing-walk again if she got the chance.

"If I'm fit as I am now, I'd go and do it tomorrow," she said.

On her online fundraising page, Betty says she first set the Guinness World Record in August 2022 with a "'Loop-the-Loop' and a 'Barrel-Roll'".

Her more recent wing-walk in August 2026 broke her own record, and saw her walk on a plane upside down.

She has now completed six wing walks in the past 10 years.

She said she'll need to come up with "something special" for when she turns 100.
