Are you taking part in the Great British Beach Clean?

An environmental charity is asking people to pick up their gloves and bin bags and head to the beach.

Why? Because it's the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Great British Beach Clean this weekend.

The charity are concerned that the record temperatures this summer might have caused a big rise in plastic pollution, as everyone flocked to the beach to enjoy the sun.

So, they're asking for volunteers to join in their nationwide beach clean and help clear litter from the UK coastline.

But the volunteers will not just be collecting rubbish. They'll be gathering data too.

Over the last 32 years, volunteers have recorded more than three million pieces of litter, which has helped to paint a picture of how the litter that washes up on UK shores is changing.

This year's beach clean will show whether more litter was dropped on UK beaches this year because of the unusually hot weather.

Last year, the MCS beach clean found an average of 105 plastic items on every 100 metres of beach visited by volunteers.

Plastic pollution can be dangerous for marine animals and the ocean because the material stays in the environment for decades, breaking apart into even smaller pieces, which can then be swallowed by animals.
