For the first time ever, Britain is voting on its favourite butterfly!

The UK is home to around 60 butterfly species and Butterfly Conservation want to know which of these insects people like best.

The poll is open until 7 June, and the wildlife charity hopes that by looking through the different species, people will learn more about them and be able to spot them more easily.

Which winged wonder are you going to vote for? Let us know in the comments below.

Which butterfly should I vote for?

It's not just about which flutterer you find the most fabulous-looking.

Butterfly Conservation also wants people to think about the quirks, sportiness or toughness of these winged creatures.

For example, the Painted Lady who makes the huge journey from North Africa, the Middle East or Central Asia to Britain every year.

Or the Peacock Butterfly, who has developed dark undersides to their wings to make them look like dead leaves!

Butterflies play a very important role in our ecosystems, helping pollinate flowers and plants, controlling pests and providing food for other animals, like birds and bats.

Butterflies and moths are also super ancient insects - they've been around for at least 50 million years, although some say it could be closer to 150 million.

Currently, more than three-quarters of UK butterfly species are now in decline.
