Strikes between Russia and Ukraine continued overnight after weeks of intensifying fire between the two sides.

Russia's defence ministry claims they faced the "largest-scale attack" by Ukraine in 2026, shooting down 822 drones overnight.

Ukraine also hit another warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries - the defence ministry says it believes it has disabled the warehouse, which it says is the company's largest.

It has struck several of the retailer's sites in recent weeks, claiming they provide the Russian military with equipment - Russia denies the claims.

Meanwhile, a market in Ukraine's capital Kyiv was hit by a Russian attack, sparking a large fire and destruction.

One woman told the BBC that she lost thousands in stock from her vinyl business, and others lost "even more".

Strikes were reported elsewhere in the country, including in Sumy, Donetsk and Kherson. Several people have reportedly been killed in both Russia and Ukraine following the attacks.

Elsewhere, a Spanish F-18 fighter jet on a Nato air-policing mission shot down a drone that had breached Romanian airspace, the country’s defence ministry says. It entered from Moldova, but it isn't clear where it came from.

In Donetsk, in Russian-occupied Ukraine, a hypermarket can be seen destroyed after it was hit by a drone.

The Russia-appointed mayor of the city, Alexey Kulemzin, claims it was hit by a Ukrainian drone. Ukraine hasn't commented.

In the last few minutes, Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper has said one more person has now been confirmed injured in the latest round of strikes on the region.

He adds that emergency services are continuing "to deal with the aftermath of the attack".

Oleh Kiper, the governor of the Odesa region, says three people have been injured in strikes in the area in the last few hours.

Writing on Telegram, Kiper says the trio was injured after two residential buildings were struck by a reaction-propelled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The governor also updated the number of people hurt in an attack on a post office on the outskirts of Odesa to four - including a woman and three men aged between 32 and 43.

The founder of one of Ukraine's leading publishing houses tells me he believes the Kyiv book market, heavily damaged by a Russian attack, is lost for good.

Oleksandr Krasovitsky founded Folio, which works with several traders at the market in Pochayna as well as several warehouses nearby belonging to Ukrainian publishers.

Around 500 traders were working at the book market, he says. "Everyone who was there lost everything, except for the section of the market selling second-hand books.”

He adds: "Everything that people have spent decades building up, whether in these small stalls or large shops, will never be restored."

The market, he says, has existed for around 30 years and primarily used to sell Russian books.

Krasovitsky estimates his publishing company has lost between 1.5 and 3 million hryvina (£24,800-49,600) in business due to the destruction at the market - and may have lost more due to damage at nearby warehouses.

As we reported earlier, Romania says a drone that breached its airspace was shot down by a Spanish F-18 fighter on a Nato air policing mission.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu has since published a statement thanking Spain for its "concrete contribution" to Romania's security.

Romania borders Ukraine - Toiu says it is therefore "on the front line defending the Nato and European Union border", and will "continue to build a strong defence and deterrence on the Eastern Flank".

The foreign minister says that this is the third drone to have illegally entered Romania's airspace and been shot down in the past three weeks.

She adds that Romanian radars "monitored attacks of more than 100 drones outside our border on Ukrainian Danube ports" - something she says is an attempt to "stop international food trade".

The "growing scale" of Russian missile and drone attacks makes strengthening the protection of Ukraine’s skies "an urgent priority", Ukraine's foreign minister says.

In a post on social media, Andrii Sybiha says he spoke to his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, briefing him on the consequences of Russia’s attacks.

He says he also discussed security in the Black Sea with Gerapetritis, saying Russia's attacks on Ukrainian ports and maritime infrastructure "pose a direct threat to freedom of navigation, international trade, and global food security".

"For Ukraine and Greece, two maritime nations, freedom of navigation is a matter of principle and security," he says.

"We share an interest in keeping it open, secure, and free for maritime navigation."

At least eight people have been killed and 39 injured in the latest wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine.

Rounds of air raid alerts, missiles and drones could be heard in Kyiv overnight, writes our Ukraine correspondent, where a book market was hit.

One business owner tells the BBC "this business was my baby" as books and bric-a-brac were left scattered among the strike's debris.

Meanwhile, Andrey Vorobyov - the regional governor of Moscow - says the region was hit by "one of the most massive drone attacks in recent memory".

And Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin says more than 600 Ukrainian drones were intercepted heading for the Russian capital.

Thick clouds of smoke have been seen rising from the site of a Ukrainian drone strike on a facility belonging to Wildberries - often described as "Russia's Amazon".

It's the latest in a series of strikes on the online retailer by Ukraine in recent weeks.

Ukraine has been reporting multiple injuries and deaths following the latest wave of Russian attacks across the country.

As we reported earlier, officials in the Sumy region said a 59-year-old man died after a car was hit. Elsewhere in Sumy, in the Velyka Pysarivka community, a 51-year-old man was killed in a drone strike.

The governor of Donetsk also says a person was killed in the region. One death has been recorded in Kherson.

Two people in their 60s were killed following a strike on a house in the Zaphorizhzhia region. And officials have updated the death toll in the Dnipropetrovsk region's city of Kryvyi Rih to two.

At least 39 people have been injured in the attacks overnight, including six in the Kyiv region and two in the Odesa region after a strike on an post office.

Russian state news agency Tass says that Russia shot down 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, citing the defence ministry.

It quotes the Russian defence ministry as saying the Ukrainian attack was at "the largest scale" seen the start of the year.

Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 600 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted heading for the Russian capital.

The drone attack on a Wildberries warehouse in the Moscow region is the latest in Ukraine's campaign against the Russian retailer.

Ukraine has hit a number of Wildberries logistics hubs, describing them as legitimate targets because they provide the Russian military with drone components, navigation equipment and other gear. Russia denies this.

As we've been reporting, Ukraine has hit another warehouse belonging to online retailer Wildberries.

Following that, Ukraine's defence ministry says it believes the logistics hub in Koledino Industrial Park has ceased operations.

"It was the largest warehouse of the Wildberries company in terms of area – 250,000sq m," the ministry says, adding that it has now disabled seven of the company's 10 largest logistics centres.

Earlier this morning, Wildberries published a statement saying an attack on a logistics facility in the area had led to a fire.

"Logistics chains have been reorganised, and the receipt of deliveries and the shipment of orders are being handled at other facilities," it says.

A Spanish F-18 fighter jet on a Nato air-policing mission shot down a drone that had breached Romanian airspace, the country’s defence ministry says.

It did not specify the drone’s origin, with the ministry saying it entered the country from neighbouring Moldova.

News agency Reuters quotes Nato military headquarters spokesperson Martin O’Donnell as saying the incident "remains under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian".

Romania says the F-18 jet, part of a Spanish Nato contingent deployed in Romania, "made radar contact with the target and received permission to engage".

The drone was shot down at 05:01 local time (03:01 BST), it adds, and fragments from the drone appear to have fallen in an uninhabited area between two villages.

It is the fourth unmanned aircraft shot down over the country this year.

Russian forces have been making slow advances towards the Zaporizhzhia region’s village of Hulyaipole, the US-based Institute for Study of War (ISW) says in its latest assessment of the war, external.

However, the ISW also notes that the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been “exaggerating” its progress in the region as Moscow seeks to “propagate claims of expansive Russian gains”.

Russia has also been claiming advances in the illegally-occupied Donetsk region – claims Ukraine has rejected, reporting the liberation of 26 villages in the area up to August 2026.

The institute also reports Ukrainian forces have made advances to the east of the city of Slovyansk, and geolocated footage shows they have also “advanced or maintained positions” towards Pokrovsk – also in Donetsk.

No ground activity towards Kherson has been reported for either Ukraine or Russia in the past 24 hours, the ISW says.

"Ukrainian forces continue striking Russian military assets and energy infrastructure in occupied Crimea," it adds.

There are still pockets of flame among the twisted and charred market stalls.

The missile attack has reduced hundreds of tiny individual businesses to smouldering wreckage.

There are damaged books on the floor drenched in water and covered in ash.

Russia says it struck Kyiv overnight targeting sites supplying Ukraine’s military, but this was a second-hand market selling records, posters, toys and tools.

A week ago I was here myself browsing the bric-a-brac with the families hunting for a bargain.

In daytime hundreds of people would have been picking through the stalls.

Some of them have come to see the destruction and are moved to tears.

This early morning strike injured a handful of people; another illustration of the risk Ukrainians face in everyday activities.

Luba tells the BBC she lost around 500,000 hryvnias worth of stock (£8,262) in the Russian strike on a Kyiv market.

"I want Russia to disappear from this earth," the 42-year-old says. "Some people lost even more than me in this strike.

"This business was my baby, many of the vinyl destroyed were rare and irreplaceable."

Valentina, 69, has also been searching through the rubble of the market.

“You never think that it will happen to you," she says. "All these books in the street were from my husband's stall in the market, I recognise them on the floor."

Here in Kyiv, firefighters continue to put out flames at a book market at Pochayna.

Burnt books and bric-a-brac can seen among the smoke and ash, while small fires are still burning.

Some men are picking through the lesser-burnt books.

The governor of the Rostov region in southern Russia says five people have died in overnight Ukrainian strikes on the area.

Yury Slyusar says the attack also caused damage to several buildings and sparked a fire in two forest areas.

In the Belgorod region, Governor Alexander Shuvaev says a woman was killed after a bus was struck in the Rakityansky district. Another woman suffered "severe traumatic brain injuries" and remains in hospital.

Earlier, we reported an 83-year-old has been killed in a drone attack on the Ramensky district of the Moscow region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that European interceptors "cannot simply be allowed to sit in storage" following another round of Russian strikes on Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Zelensky has repeatedly called for more air defence support in the face of increased Russian attacks.

In a post on X, Zelensky insists that "lives need to be protected" and claims that North Korean ballistic missiles are being used to "destroy infrastructure and claim lives here in Europe".

He says that Russia must be stopped and adds that new packages of support "literally mean lives saved and infrastructure protected every single day".

The Sunday Times reports, external that UK manufactured drones are now being used for deep strikes within Russia.

The BBC has spoken to a well-placed military source who has confirmed the story.

The drones, built by two separate British companies, have been part of a widespread and successful targeting of Russian industrial and military targets in mainland Russia, most notably refineries and warehouses of the online retailer Wildberries.

According to the Sunday Times’ Dominic Hauschild and Vika Sybir, who wrote the original story, the campaign has caused more than £35bn in economic damage.

British manufactured Storm Shadow missiles had previously been used in the conflict, although this new phase is having a far more decisive impact.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has previously said that drones using UK components and configurations have been used to attack Russian territory, including a fuel depot in the Kamensky district of Rostov.
