There are still pockets of flame among the twisted and charred market stalls.

Russia says it struck Kyiv overnight targeting sites supplying Ukraine’s military, but this was a second-hand market selling records, posters, toys and tools.

A week ago I was here myself browsing the bric-a-brac with the families hunting for a bargain.

In daytime hundreds of people would have been picking through the stalls.

Some of them have come to see the destruction and are moved to tears.

This early morning strike injured a handful of people; another illustration of the risk Ukrainians face in everyday activities.

Luba tells the BBC she lost around 500,000 hryvnias worth of stock (£8,262) in the Russian strike on a Kyiv market.

"I want Russia to disappear from this earth," the 42-year-old says. "Some people lost even more than me in this strike.

"This business was my baby, many of the vinyl destroyed were rare and irreplaceable."

Valentina, 69, has also been searching through the rubble of the market.

“You never think that it will happen to you," she says. "All these books in the street were from my husband's stall in the market, I recognise them on the floor."

Here in Kyiv, firefighters continue to put out flames at a book market at Pochayna.

Burnt books and bric-a-brac can seen among the smoke and ash, while small fires are still burning.

Some men are picking through the lesser-burnt books.

The governor of the Rostov region in southern Russia says five people have died in overnight Ukrainian strikes on the area.

Yury Slyusar says the attack also caused damage to several buildings and sparked a fire in two forest areas.

In the Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov says a woman was killed after a bus was struck in the Rakityansky district. Another woman suffered "severe traumatic brain injuries" and remains in hospital.

Earlier, we reported an 83-year-old has been killed in a drone attack on the Ramensky district of the Moscow region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that European interceptors "cannot simply be allowed to sit in storage" following another round of Russian strikes on Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Zelensky has repeatedly called for more air defence support in the face of increased Russian attacks.

In a post on X, Zelensky insists that "lives need to be protected" and claims that North Korean ballistic missiles are being used to "destroy infrastructure and claim lives here in Europe".

He says that Russia must be stopped and adds that new packages of support "literally mean lives saved and infrastructure protected every single day".

The Sunday Times reports, external that UK manufactured drones are now being used for deep strikes within Russia.

The BBC has spoken to a well-placed military source who has confirmed the story.

The drones, built by two separate British companies, have been part of a widespread and successful targeting of Russian industrial and military targets in mainland Russia, most notably refineries and warehouses of the online retailer Wildberries.

According to the Sunday Times’ Dominic Hauschild and Vika Sybir, who wrote the original story, the campaign has caused more than £35bn in economic damage.

British manufactured Storm Shadow missiles had previously been used in the conflict, although this new phase is having a far more decisive impact.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has previously said that drones using UK components and configurations have been used to attack Russian territory, including a fuel depot in the Kamensky district of Rostov.

Russian civilians are starting to feel the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine now that Kyiv has updated its military strategy, says security expert Dr Hanna Shelest.

Kyiv has changed its approach from a mainly defensive one and is instead working on making it impossible for Moscow to strike in the first place, she tells the BBC. Its focus is on military enterprises with a dual use, she adds.

Wildberries has emerged as one of the leading targets in Ukraine's latest strike campaigns.

Shelest says this is due to the online retailer's alleged role aiding the Russian war effort - as well as it being widely used by the Russian public.

"Civilians in Russia, for four years, didn’t feel the war existed," Shelest says.

She adds: "For them, it was [like] a nice soap opera on TV and propaganda statements by the leadership.

"But now they really see the fire, they see what the war means... they see the impact on the economy and they see the visual pictures, which is really important for the perception of the war."

Ukraine's army says it has struck a missile fuel production facility in Russia.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says in a post on Telegram that it hit the Kamensky Plant in the Rostov region of western Russia.

He describes it as "an important enemy military-industrial facility" that is "directly used to meet the needs of the Russian armed forces".

Russian officials have yet to comment on the attack.

Earlier, it said Ukraine had struck multiple "high-value military targets" in Saturday night.

Moscow Governor Andrey Vorobyov says an 83-year-old man has been killed in the Ramensky district, when a drone crashed on the grounds of a private house.

He adds that several people have been injured, and emergency services are working to "mitigate the consequences of the attack".

The drone attack - in Koledino, around 25km (15.5 miles) from the centre of Moscow - is the latest in Ukraine's campaign targeting the Russian retailer, often referred to as "Russia's Amazon".

Ukraine and Russia attacks intensifying in recent weekspublished at 10:19 BST

Things have generally been increasing in intensity between both sides in the past few weeks.

In terms of Kyiv, the capital, the last few nights have actually been very calm - but last night it was certainly a different picture, with rounds of air raids alerts and missiles and drones.

There’s been a heavy exchange of fire by both sides in recent days.

Ukraine has claimed success for the long-range drone attacks that it has launched against oil refineries but also against the warehouses of Wildberries, the Russian online retailer.

One of those warehouses is burning again this morning on the edge of Moscow. Ukraine says it is targeting those facilities because Russia uses them to supply its military.

Firefighters have been tackling a fire that started overnight at a market in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after it was hit by Russian missiles and drones - it has since been extinguished, emergency services say.

Air-raid sirens have sounded five times since Saturday night in Kyiv. At least six people, including a child, were reportedly injured in the capital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko says.

We have had another air raid alert in Kyiv, the fifth since midnight. Russian drones were reported as heading towards the eastern edge of the city.

We've since been given the all clear.

Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin says more than 600 Ukrainian drones have been intercepted heading for the Russian capital.

Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov describes how the region has been hit by "one of the most massive drone attacks in recent memory".

He says that a drone strike caused a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in the Koledino Industrial Park and that employees were forced to evacuate. Ukraine has not commented on the attack.

Wildberries - Russia's biggest online retailer - has been targeted in recent weeks by Ukraine, which says the company's warehouses are being used as "logistics facilities" for military equipment.

The Kremlin has denied that online platforms are used for army supplies, but a variety of military-related goods such as body armour are on sale, alongside items with both civilian and drone-production applications.

A fifth Ukrainian has been reported killed in Russian strikes overnight.

The mayor of Kryvyi Rih says a 44-year-old man reported missing has been found dead in rubble.

Another person was killed and 14 workers of a steel plant were wounded. Russia says the site was producing weapons components.

Two people in their 60s were killed when a house was destroyed in Zaporizhzhia.

Emergency services say fires at a market in Kyiv have now been extinguished after it was hit overnight.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says six people have been injured in the city, following four rounds of air strikes through the night and this morning. The president referred to a fifth death yesterday evening in Sumy, when a car was hit.

Russia says its attacks on Kyiv last night targeted a FirePoint facility producing parts for Ukrainian Flamingo missiles, and a factory making components for drones.

Russia’s defence ministry says in Poltava region, it hit the Kremenchuk oil refinery which it says supplies fuel to the Ukrainian military.

Russia says it hit a dry cargo vessel near Odesa, claiming it was carrying military equipment.
