Christopher Plummer played Hamlet and his best friend Horatio was played by a young Michael Caine – his only filmed Shakespearean role.
Made to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birthday, the play was filmed on location in the actual setting where it was set by Shakespeare. A BBC co-production with DR, Denmark's national broadcaster, it made use of the latest outside-broadcast technology available at the time.
