Vickerstown The area known as Vickerstown on Walney was built to house the shipyard workers more than 100 years ago. The first street built in Vickerstown was Latona Street.  | Latona Street |
The first tenant to live on Vickerstown was a man called David Mason - a clerk at Vickers who moved into Number 28. While waiting for their houses to be built, the skilled workers of Vickers lived onboard the Atlantic Liner Alaska, which was berthed at Devonshire Dock.  | Street on Walney |
People from Barrow used to take the ferry across to Walney to watch the houses being built on Vickerstown. Street names in the area were mixture of names of ships (Powerful, Leopard Street etc) and those of Boer War Generals (Baden-Powell, French Street etc).  | Jubilee Bridge |
Jubilee Bridge Walney Bridge was originally a toll bridge. It was opened on July 30th 1908. The ratepayers were asked whether a bridge was needed and they decided it was. The Walney Bridge was renamed Jubilee Bridge by the Queen Mother in 1935.  | Boats |
