Last year 3,000 people took part in the scheme across the UK
Residents in coastal areas of East Yorkshire are being urged to act as guardians for their local beaches in a rural coastline clean-up drive.

It is hoped the scheme run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council will help rural communities to care for their local beaches.

On Saturday volunteers will be encouraged to clear litter, maintain signs and report any problems.

The initiative, entitled Beachwatch 2005, also aims to improve safety.

Councillor Jane Evison said: "If the past support from volunteer groups to clean local beaches is anything to go by, I am confident the response to Beachwatch 2005 will be strong.

"The excellent work already carried out by volunteers has resulted in the area being awarded a number of Rural Beach Awards."

Beaches being combed in the scheme are at Flamborough North and South Landing, Wilsthorpe, Fraisthorpe, Barmston, Ulrome, Hornsea and Spurn Point.
