1998: Ginger leaves the Spice Girls

Geri Halliwell announces her split from the Spice Girls on 31 May 1998.

The statement follows days of increasingly feverish speculation after the group made television and concert appearances without Ms Halliwell, who was known in the group as Ginger Spice.

Around 30 journalists gathered outside of the offices of the group’s solicitors, where statements were read on behalf of Geri Halliwell and the other four members of the Spice Girls.

In their announcement, the remaining members were supportive of Ms Halliwell and added, “The Spice Girls are here to stay… Friendship never ends.”
