What are you up to?

By Kate Hayward
Intrepid BBC Suffolk reporter Kate Hayward stopped David and Jo in Lowestoft town centre and asked them "What are you up to?". Read their replies...

"I’m David Remblance. I’ve lived in Lowestoft all my life, in the same place, at home with my parents."

Have you got a job?

"I work at KFC as a cook. I’ve only been there a week. I’m trained in window fitting, mechanics and graphics so those are the sort of jobs I’m looking for.

It’s hard to get a mechanics job and for graphics I’d have to move out of Lowestoft to get anything decent, and I’ll have to save up money if I’m going to move away. A lot of the garages want specific qualifications which I haven’t got, and trying to get a trainee job round here just doesn’t work."

What are you hoping for in 2005?

"My ambitions for 2005 are to get a better job, a car and my own place."

Jo Fulcher, is from Beccles.

What are you up to, Jo?

"I’m at college doing painting and decorating but I want to do interior design as well. You have to be a qualified decorator to do the design course and it’s like really expensive. My tutor is going to try and get me on to the course but it depends on my qualifications, so we’ll have to see at the end of the year how I’ve done."

Why interior design, were you inspired by all the TV makeover shows?

"My dad’s got his own decorating business and you see the work he does and he’s really got me into it. I’m quite good at design and that, if you gave me an empty room I’d be able to decorate it.

I’d like to go to university in London to do design. My friend has gone to London and she says it’s really expensive and my brother has just moved out and he’s in Norwich and he’s got a student loan but it hasn’t come through so he’s really skint and he’s been having to borrow loads of money to keep him going."

You’ve got a crash hat, do you ride a bike?

"I’m learning to drive a car but I’ve got a moped. I don’t like it, in the winter it’s really cold.

I’ve come off it once. I got hit by a car on the way to college and I ended up in hospital. It took me a while to get back on a moped and I was a bit nervous about the car as well as I’ve been in a car accident too. But I really like driving now."

Where do you go out? Beccles?

"Beccles? God no! Lowestoft is alright for going out but there’s not a lot if you’re into our sort of music. The only place we go to is Bluenotes on the pier. We dress a bit different and we’re into metal, heavy metal.

The Darkness are alright but they’re not really our sort of style. We’ve met the drummer of the Darkness at Bluenotes, and they are a cool band but the music is a bit too “soft” for us. I’ve got lots of friends in bands like D Void in Lowestoft, so it’s really cool and we go to their gigs every week. You get in cheaper if you’re a friend of the band."

So what are your plans for 2005?

"My ambition for 2005 is to pass my driving test and get a better job, cos I work in a plastics factory."
