Pink Thinking!

By Charlie Eaton
Leg wax, hair dye and nail varnish were all required when West Suffolk College held a charity event, reports Charlie, 17, a student at the college.

Charlie Eaton is an NVQ Level 3 Beauty Therapy student at West Suffolk College. She writes:

Today (19th October 2004), we had a Think Pink day in college in aid of the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

I was going to wax Phil Stittle's legs this afternoon, but he chickened out! Phil was one of six male staff members who volunteered - and two of them changed their minds.

Some of the men did turn up in the beauty salon and went through with having their legs waxed to support the charity. One of them has been promised around £90 in sponsorship.

We did leg waxing in the first year of the course, so I have had a lot of practice, but I hadn't waxed a man's legs before. The guy I waxed said it didn't hurt - but I could tell by his face he was just trying to be manly!

I dressed up in pink for the day - we all did - and it has been great fun. We went round earlier in the day with buckets asking for spare change, and sold cakes as well. They went really quickly. People have been spraying their hair pink; everybody has got involved.

My mum had a lump in her breast a while ago. It turned out to be nothing serious, but the scare of that makes you realise how important this research is.

We have raised over £500 already, with more money to come in.
