More from Ben Shelton who will face Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semi-final: "I'm so grateful, so blessed. God has blessed me in so many ways for me to be in front of you guys tonight.

"It is an absolute honour to share the court with Carlos. I cherish every moment that I have out here."

  3. 'This is the greatest sports city' - Sheltonpublished at 08:50 BST

Ben Shelton on beating Carlos Alcaraz to reach the semi-final: "For me it's always about the people in the crowd, whether it's my coaches and my team, all of my family and friends or the city of New York that showed up tonight until 3AM, that's what kept me going tonight.

"It is incredible, I always say that this is the greatest sports city in the world, this is the greatest stadium in the world. I'm just hoping my best friend and sister don't have to be at work at 6AM. It would be huge from their employers to let them have the day off."

  4. Not to be for Alcarazpublished at 08:48 BST

    Alcaraz 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 3-6 6-1 6-6 (7-10) Shelton

Alcaraz was making his return from a well-documented wrist injury in New York so it will be interesting to see how he judges his tournament.

The Spaniard will of course be disappointed to bow out, and the 53 unforced errors he made in that match was certainly uncharacteristic.

But he didn't appear overly forlorn as he made his way off the court, looking his usually-chipper self.

Although he's probably just grateful he can go to bed.

    Alcaraz 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 3-6 6-1 6-6 Shelton*

Alcaraz gets the all-important hold but there were a couple of extremely tired-looking shots from the Spaniard in there.

He produces a stunning forehand to go 40-15, before a sloppy double fault.

But Shelton hits a poor shot of his own to gift Alcaraz a way out and we're heading for a tie-break to decide this one.
