Unfunded England swimmer Clark wins bronze

Self-funded England swimmer Imogen Clark won bronze in the women's 50m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games.

The 27-year-old won a silver medal in Birmingham four years ago but had not won another international medal since European bronze in Rome in 2022.

She tied for bronze in Glasgow with Canada's Sophie Angus, with both touching the wall in 30.86 seconds as South Africa's Lara van Niekerk won gold and Sienna Toohey of Australia took silver.

"There's so much sacrifice that goes into it," Clark told BBC Sport.

"I'm an unfunded athlete, I work a full-time job alongside [swimming] and to stay at this level while living a normal life is so tough.

"It's paid off because you get up all those early mornings, you go to work and to get that medal and stand up there in front of my family means everything."

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Amalie Smith earned her second medal of the Games with bronze in the women's 200m individual medley, while Lauren Cox made the podium with her third-place finish in the women's 50m backstroke.

Smith also won silver in the 400m individual medley on Monday.
