Ronnie O'Sullivan will be very pleased with his day's work and it will be rest and start again tomorrow. Ronnie has seemed measured in interviews and he's enjoying the challenge. Sometimes he's come here and not been liked the attention but he looks more relaxed with the eyes up on him.

Ronnie O'Sullivan leads John Higgins 6-2 after the opening session of their World Championship last-16 tie but Mark Williams, the other member of snooker's fabled 'Class of 92', was knocked out of the tournament.

Williams, 51, reached the final of the 2025 competition, but lost 13-9 to 2013 finalist Barry Hawkins at a packed Crucible.

Before the matches started the crowd gave a standing ovation to the players, to celebrate the contribution of O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams, who have won 14 world titles between them.

The much-anticipated match between 50-year-olds O'Sullivan and Higgins came 30 years after their first Crucible meeting.

Seven-time champion O'Sullivan was in superb form on Saturday as breaks of 86, 82, 137 and 95 saw him win four of the first five frames to lead 4-1.

Higgins got his first sizeable break of the match in frame six with a run of 68, but O'Sullivan won the last two frames, including a break of 76 in the final frame of the day to end with a four-frame advantage.

The match will resume on Sunday evening at 19:00, with O'Sullivan needing to win six more frames to win with a session to spare.

O'Sullivan, who beat He Guoqiang 10-2 in the opening round, despite using different cues in the two sessions, is aiming to win an eighth world title, which would set an outright record in the modern era.

I think on what we've seen 6-2 is the right scoreline. Tomorrow is another day for John Higgins and he's got to make the most of chances. He's capable of beating Ronnie 6-2 tomorrow. He's going to have to find his top game because Ronnie doesn't look like he is going to dip.

    O'Sullivan wins the session

The most impressive thing from Ronnie O'Sullivan tonight is his intensity. He's been on it from the first frame. Whenever he has got in he's potted nearly all the balls he's supposed to pot.

A wonderful session of snooker from Ronnie O'Sullivan who produces the good in this much-anticipated match. John Higgins is in big trouble.

    Higgins 2-6 O'Sullivan

A game of cat and mouse on the final red before Ronnie O'Sullivan pots it and disposes of the final to close out the final frame of session.

The seven-time world champion is in a commanding position.

A timeline of John Higgins v Ronnie O'Sullivan's matches

John Higgins makes a break of 30 and then lays up a snooker on the final red with the cue ball tucked in behind the pink.

Classic tactical play from the Scot.

These two players have enjoyed some fantastic matches over the past three decades.

    Higgins 2-5 O'Sullivan

Slim hopes for John Higgins to escape with 5-3 here.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has a break of 76 to start the frame with 67 remaining on the table before accidentally leaving the cue ball tucked in among three of the remaining reds.

John Higgins decides to return to the table. He'll need snookers.

    John Parrott

Ronnie O'Sullivan has been sharp all evening. I do think this frame is a massive frame for John Higgins. If he comes away 5-3 he will be delighted.

    Higgins 2-5 O'Sullivan

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

Ronnie O'Sullivan has shown a lot of artistry tonight and has made John Higgins look a bit pedestrian at times. Higgins has been fighting a rearguard action and if he can out by winning this final frame he'll be delighted.

It always feels like the final frame of a session is important. It's 6-2 or 5-3.

  14. An omen for the victor?published at 21:43 BST 25 April

    O'Sullivan extends his lead

The last time John Higgins beat Ronnie O'Sullivan at the Crucible was in in 2011

The Scot went on to win the world title that year.

Ditto when O'Sullivan beat Higgins in 2022 in Sheffield he went to become champion.

As expected O'Sullivan closes out the seventh frame and has a commanding three-frame lead over Higgins.

    Higgins 2-4 O'Sullivan

Ronnie O'Sullivan having a bit of cut-tip issue. A small fibre on the end of the cue is distracting him. He opens his case and pulls out a bit of sandpaper to scratch it off.

O'Sullivan then promptly dispatches the cue ball from off the cushion to pot the black. the Rocket is 42-7 up in this seventh frame and it's looking ominous for John Higgins.

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

If John Higgins can get out of here 5-3 he will be delighted, I think. He knows full well with the way sessions can change around that you want to stay in touch with your opponent. He had a good knock in the interval and made use of the chances this time around.

  18. Higgins finds a bit of formpublished at 21:23 BST 25 April

    Higgins 2-4 O'Sullivan

Not quite a clearance for John Higgins as he cannot quite squeeze the green into the left-corner pocket - much to his chagrin - but nevertheless a valuable frame to find some form for the veteran Scot.

  19. Postpublished at 21:20 BST 25 April

    Higgins 1-4 O'Sullivan

A bit of a confidence boosting frame for John Higgins.

He's looking a little bit more fluent with time spent at the table. He's 77-5 points to the good and will want to make this break as big as possible,
