England salvage bronze in gymnastics team event

England's new-look women's gymnastics team edged out Wales by 0.9 points to clinch bronze at the Commonwealth Games in a thrilling contest.

None of the gold medal-winning team from the 2022 Games featured in Glasgow, with all five England athletes making their Commonwealth debuts following Taeja James' withdrawal because of injury.

England started well on vault but a handful of errors across the uneven bars and beam proved too costly for gold medal contention.

However, the team managed to inch ahead of Wales for a spot on the podium after World floor bronze medallist Abi Martin topped the standings on the final apparatus.

"I knew we were in fourth place behind Wales before the floor so I just knew I had to go give it my all," Martin told BBC Sport.

"I got a bit emotional after. I knew it was one of my best floor routines. It might not have scored the highest but it was definitely my best performance for myself.

"When I can hear my whole team supporting me, even the whole crowd supporting me the whole way through, when I finished I was overwhelmed with emotions."

Canada secured the silver, while Australia put in a strong performance to collect gold.

Martin will compete again in three further finals; the all-around, floor and vault.

Shantae-Eve Amankwaah will also compete in the all-around and floor finals, as well as the uneven bars.

Ruby Stacey will join Martin in the vault final and Alia Leat secured a spot on the beam after missing out on the all-around with only two athletes able to complete per team.
