Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson says it was "a real captain's performance" from Bruno Fernandes in Manchester United's 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, live from Old Trafford, Robinson said: "A very good and controlled second half performance from Manchester United.

"They went 1-0 down which was a test of their character. As soon as they went in front, they looked to power on.

"A real captain's performance from Bruno Fernandes - a hat-trick and an assist as well.

"There are defensive frailties there which will get exposed against better sides.

"It's not a season defining game for Ipswich, but a job extremely well done for Manchester United."

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Results are nice to win like that. I said after the game last week that we were disappointed and it has hurt all week.

"We managed it well and didn't make too much of it in the end. We shouldn't be going down 1-0 at home. We're going to have setbacks along the way, but it's how you deal with them. The quality comes and we have a good day because we score goals and win well.

"They had a couple of moments and we got back to it and took control. The second half was particularly good. Delighted, a lot of positives."

On Ipswich's misfortune: "There are two sides to the coin, obviously. I understand the disappointment for them. It's one of those things and we took advantage of it.

"Bruno played well today. You could see the connection through the middle with him, Matheus, Kobbie and Youri. To come back and reset with the week Bruno has had makes it a good one."

United defender Luke Shaw speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a really good day in the end. It was a tough week so we had to bounce back.

"I'm disappointed in myself for the first goal, someone with that experience I should be doing much better so I take responsibility for that. That's not me and I was extremely disappointed with myself.

"The second half performance was us, there are lots of good things to take out of that and of course there are always things you can improve on. Today was really important to get the three points.

"It's never nice when you lose a game, especially the first game of the season when there is a lot of optimism. The best thing to do is block out the noise and focus on ourselves. There's lots of good things to take for it and push on.

On Bruno Fernandes: "I kind of run out of words to speak about Bruno to be honest. He is such a good player.

"I would like to speak about Kobbie [Mainoo]. I think today he was world class, so, so good. The way he controlled the game and the way he drove us forward.

"I know Bruno scored the hat-trick, but I would put Mainoo down for man of the match. He is so young and it is such a joy to see him growing. For me he was phenomenal A real leader in that middle."

Where would Manchester United have been for the past six years without Fernandes? Luckily that is not a question they need to ask or answer because they do have him.

This week he was named the Professional Footballers' Association's men's player of the year for last season's exploits, where he broke a Premier League record with 21 assists.

And he followed that up with his third hat-trick in a United shirt to take his tally up to 113 goals in 330 games.

Michael Carrick's side really needed their captain to step up to the plate too after going behind.

Having lost 2-0 to Hull last weekend, they were in danger of becoming just the fourth top-flight team ever to lose their first two games of a season against newly promoted clubs.

They could have been trailing by more than one goal too - with Senne Lammens being called into action more than once.

But the Portuguese scored thrice and then set up Mbeumo - who had earlier hit the bar - for the fifth goal.

Moments after the hat-trick goal Fernandes shot from the centre circle but his effort landed on the roof of the net.

The ultimate manner of the victory means there will be less focus on their second goal - which would have been disallowed had the VAR not ruled that Greaves diverted Maguire's shot into his own net.

Well done to Ipswich for their start. It took them 11 games to get the first win under Kieran McKenna the last time they were in the Premier League and they've got off to a great start already.

Under Gary O'Neil they have got a bit about them - they've got players who can get them up the pitch, they have got pace with Daizen Maeda and Emersonn looks a bit of a handful.

I think they could cause United one or two problems but it's unthinkable that Manchester United could lose their opening two games of the season. Their start was an absolute stinker - they were very flat against Hull.

With respect, it was an open goal start for the season for them, with Hull then Ipswich - two promoted sides - and it would be bordering on catastrophic for Michael Carrick if they lose again.

I remember the days when United used to beat Ipswich 9-0 but I don't think it will be nine and I think Ipswich will score. I think Ipswich will score first but United will come from behind to win - panic over, Carrick's the king again.

Manchester United will look to bounce back from defeat by one newly promoted side when they take on another at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Ipswich Town the visitors.

The surprise 2-0 reverse against Hull City on the opening weekend was just Michael Carrick's third loss in 18 games across his two spells as the club's head coach, and it came despite United having 71.7% possession.

It was their biggest share of possession in a league game since September 2023, but there are just eight recorded examples of United having more of the ball in a Premier League defeat.

Carrick, who gave competitive debuts to summer signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, said improvements were needed but added: "We'll stay calm, in our bubble... it's one game."

Rashford back in the reckoning

His side's problem at the MKM Stadium on Saturday was not a new one: how to break down a low block. In the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, it's been a familiar frustration for the United faithful, who witnessed substitute Marcus Rashford don the number nine shirt in his first appearance for the club since December 2024.

Despite only coming on at half-time, no United player created more chances than Rashford's four. Only Chelsea's Morgan Rogers, with five, created more chances overall across the opening matchweek.

The Red Devils have lost their opening two games of a Premier League season just twice; in the inaugural 1992-93 season – when they drew their third match at home to Ipswich and went on to win the title – and in 2022-23 under Erik ten Hag, results which prompted the purchase of Casemiro.

Historically, it's a fixture that favours United. They recorded the competition's joint-highest win with a famous 9-0 home victory in March 1995, the start of a seven-game unbeaten streak against Sunday's opponents.

Tractor Boys up and running

After returning to the top flight at the first attempt, last season's Championship runners-up got off to a flyer with a last-gasp win at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

It was an impressive start against a side competing in this season's Europe League, especially given the upheaval at Portman Road this summer, which saw ex-Manchester United first-team coach Kieran McKenna depart unexpectedly before Gary O'Neil took the reins.

The Blues, with the benefit of parachute payments from their 2024-25 relegation, had the third-biggest net spend of any side in the division going into the opening weekend, and O'Neil's starting line-up against Sunderland blended four of McKenna's promotion winners with seven new signings.

One of those summer arrivals, Brazilian forward Emersonn, scored on his Premier League debut. The last player to score in his first two appearances in the top flight for the Tractor Boys was Adam Tanner in January 1995.

Ipswich are looking to start a top-flight season with two wins in a row for just the fourth time in 28 attempts. The outcome of the previous three campaigns in which they recorded back-to-back early wins could barely be more stark.

Should the visitors trail at half-time, they might fear the worst given United haven't lost any of their past 400 home league games when leading at half-time (W365 D35). The last team to beat them when behind at the break? Ipswich Town, with a 2-1 win in May 1984.

• Carrick confirmed that Diallo is still unavailable for selection. Mason Mount is back training with the group.

• He spoke highly of new signing Carlos Baleba: "We're delighted with Carlos. [He has] massive potential. I think it's a really exciting signing for us. I think the quality that he has, the attributes that he has, that offsets a little bit of the balance of the group that we've got."

• Baleba has a "little ankle issue," which rules him out of action for a few weeks. "It's no major issue," Carrick added.

• Both Baleba and Amad could be available before next month's international break but Carrick was reluctant to put a deadline on their return.

• When asked about the plan for highly-rated academy player JJ Gabriel: "JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development."

• On fellow academy player Harry Amass, whose future at Old Trafford is uncertain: "I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens."

• On Sunday's match: "The first home game of the season is really one we look forward to, and the supporters coming. I think we had a setback last week, and you want to get back to playing well and winning football matches. It is a tough game, Ipswich obviously had a big result last week as well. It'll be another challenge for us."
