Late drama as Chelsea draw away at Lyon

Chelsea prevented Lyon scoring for the first time in 20 Champions League games to take a hard-earned point from the eight-time European champions in a 0-0 draw at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

The sides were meeting for the first time since a dramatic 2023 quarter-final in which the Blues knocked out the holders, then managed by Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor.

After a cagey first half, the game opened up after the break but neither side could find a winner, with Lauren James missing a big chance and Hannah Hampton making a brilliant save from Ada Hegerberg in the closing stages.

Lyon's Salma Paralluelo hit a strong shot into Hampton's hands from an angle for the best chance of the first half as two of Europe's most competitive sides made a tentative start to the game.

Early in the second half, a Chelsea call for a penalty resulted in a booking for Tarciane, who had fouled Sjoeke Nusken in the box but only after Lucy Bronze had interfered from an offside position.

Chelsea captain Lucy Bronze prevented what looked to be a sure opener, vitally blocking Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who scored a Champions League hat-trick against Swiss side Servette last week.

Paralluelo thought she had found the breakthrough with 20 minutes left to play, stroking the ball beyond Hampton's reach before the linesperson flagged her offside.

Moments later, Chelsea were awarded a penalty as James was floored under pressure from Salma Bacha - but this too was rescinded, following a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

Substitute James passed up Chelsea's best chance to win in the 89th minute, shooting at Lyon goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs after Alyssa Thompson made a marauding run and found her unmarked in the box.

Hampton kept her side in the game at the other end, leaping at full stretch to keep out a header by Hegerberg that looked destined to settle in the far corner of her net.

Amid a lengthy stoppage, there was still time for Chelsea to have one more go at a deciding goal. When Maika Hamano was found by Wieke Kaptein at the front post, her clever touch got the better of Grohs but dribbled the wrong side of the post.

Lyon have won the Champions League eight times, more than any other team

Analysis: Much for Bompastor to smile about

At this point in the season teams can begin to feel the crunch of fixture congestion.

Playing Lyon away is a challenge for any team, but Chelsea faced a tight turnaround for this Champions League game, fitting rest, travel and preparation into just three days after an energetic Women's Super League win against Arsenal.

Meanwhile, the French women's top flight factor in rest breaks for the teams competing in Europe, meaning Chelsea's opponents had not played since their Champions League opener against Swiss side Servette last Wednesday when they won 8-0, albeit against a team making their tournament debut.

Bompastor will be pleased her side kept out a fresh Lyon side in challenging circumstances.

Another positive was the performance of 20-year-old midfielder Lexi Potter who, following her first senior call-up for England this week, started the game for Chelsea and held her own for the full 90 minutes.
