Fifa has unveiled what it describes as a new "unique, immersive experience" pre-match ceremony for all matches at the 2026 World Cup.

All available players in a team's squad will gather around the centre circle for the national anthems, with extra-large country flag banners on the pitch behind them.

In previous World Cups, the starting XIs would be positioned in a line facing one of the stands with mascots in front of them.

Fifa has been eager to find a new way of introducing the players which involves the whole stadium.

For the 2025 Club World Cup, every starting player had an individual walk-on introduction. This proved unpopular because it added extra time to the pre-match formalities, and a number of games kicked off late.

Now world football's governing body says it will create a "360-degree ceremony" which provides an "experience from every seat".

Every player selected in the matchday squad will be joined by mascots and enter the field through a dedicated arch.

All players from both full squads, up to 52 if all are available for the match, will then come together in the centre circle for the line-ups and national anthems.

"As the Fifa World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced," said Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

"Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.

"The Fifa World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that."

Later in the tournament, the ceremony will be enhanced to include coloured smoke or pyrotechnics.

  3. England players who face uncertain futurespublished at 16:53 BST

There's a group of England players who are at the World Cup but face uncertain futures when it comes to club football.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson is among them, with both the Manchester clubs keen to sign the midfielder, and Manchester City already seeing a bid rejected.

Morgan Rogers is another player attracting major interest, with the Aston Villa attacking midfielder expected to move only for a free in excess of £80m.

Anthony Gordon has already secured a move to Barcelona, but Marcus Rashford's future at the Spanish club remains unresolved as they continue negotiations with Manchester United over making his loan move permanent.

Meanwhile, John Stones is set to leave Manchester City this summer after a trophy-laden decade and will want to find a new club before the next season begins.

Arsenal's Declan Rice, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka were involved in Champions League final last week and will join the rest of the squad at a later date.

The music is blaring at England’s final training session ahead of tomorrow’s warm-up game against New Zealand.

We know Thomas Tuchel wanted to nurture a relaxed atmosphere in camp, but this is very, very new.

The current song of choice is the Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross classic, The Best Things in Life Are Free.

Quite like it, to be fair.

Everyone wants James at RB but he has barely played there all season because of his fitness. As a Chelsea fan, I understand the hype as much as anyone, but can he really get up and down all day like he used to?

We've just watched visuals of England’s goalkeepers train, led by Jordan Pickford.

The Everton goalkeeper remains the one player almost certain to start at the World Cup - a point echoed by your 'Get Involved' England starting XIs.

Thomas Tuchel said in June 2025 that “the race is on” to be England's number one, but few expected anything else than Pickford retaining the jersey for a fifth major tournament in a row.

His 26 major tournament appearances is the joint-second highest for England prior to this World Cup, level with John Stones and behind Harry Kane, who has 29.

Peter Shilton, with a record 125 caps, is the only man to have played more times in goal for England.

He surpassed Gordon Banks’ previous mark of seven consecutive clean sheets to set a new England record last year of 10 in a row.

Against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup, he became the first England goalkeeper in 20 years to save a penalty in a major tournament shoot-out.
