England boss Thomas Tuchel on if his target to is still to win a World Cup with England like it was before the 2026 tournament: "Not at the moment because you only get a star for the World Championship, my contract is until the Euros so at the moment the target is to finish the cycle of the Nations League, try to win it, go to the final four and try to win it. and build on what we have.

England boss Thomas Tuchel on getting over the World Cup and focusing on the next campaign: "I think by the pure nature of the first match they will be hungry to prove a point, that will not be the problem.

"Still working on my messaging because my feelings are also mixed, it is still ambiguous because I think there are very positive things to take away from qualifying from the tournament, the tournament itself and at the same time it feels unfulfilled.

"It is important to recognise the records that we have as a federation, the record we have in the last 10 years, arriving in semi-finals, quarter-finals, winning a bronze medal for the first time in 60 years. It is important to recognise that and acknowledge at the same time that we haven't pushed it over the line.

"If ambition is so high and we arrived with the highest ambition in the US, the disappointment is on the same level, also very high and the downside, we didn't only arrive ambitious, we created belief through our matches, created belief within the squad, as a country. The downside is, it hurts even more if you don't make it.

"This is where we are but I think coming back to the positives, we built the brotherhood, we had a fantastic spirit and the team showed a never give in mentality and we will not compromise on that.

"The pure example of that is that we maxed out on every single game. The slight downside on it is that we are not the most economical team to play but this is maybe a characteristic of the Premier League, you have to max out every single match.

"It is nice to have a new competition and to have the world champions in our home as our guests, it makes it easier to move forwards."

England boss Thomas Tuchel on what he wants to show England fans against Spain: "I think it is an amazing start to the Nations League campaign. We had overall in the 18 months, some fantastic and positive results. We had an immaculate qualifying campaign, then we had two friendlies and eight World Cup games, 10 matches in the US, eight victories, one draw and unfortunately one loss. That hurt a lot and still does.

"But this cycle of 10 matches is something that we want to repeat, the target is to go all the way now in Nations League. If we go all the way to the final four, we have another 10 matches, six matches are safe in the Nations League but we want to make it 10 matches to create another cycle.

"It feels to me we have already started the next campaign and the next cycle and the next period with the match against France. We lost against Argentina, we were kind of out of the tournament but we were not out because there was a bronze medal match to play. The way we played it, the way we won it against maybe the strongest team, at the moment the strongest squad. Very difficult, very impressive. I think that directs the narrative for what is coming.

"Next match is against the reigning world champions, Spain. We feel the gap is closing, we feel we are close, we want to prove a point, stadium is sold out and the motivation cannot be any higher."

England boss Thomas Tuchel on players that were close to selection: "Ben [White] pulled out with an injury, he had a fantastic start with Arsenal to the season and was back to his very best on the side, especially with Bukayo Saka - which could be very valuable to us to have two players on the side but he was unfortunately not available for for the World Cup and now.

"It is unfortunately a little bit of a story with Ben, when in the moments we do the call-ups, he is not available.

"Nice that you mentioned Josh King because we had three players in prep camp with us, Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha and Josh, all three of them were fantastic members of the squad. Not only because they were nice and reliable and excellent characters, but they showed the quality, courage and curiosity on the pitch which was very nice to see.

"Josh especially had a fantastic start to the season with Fulham, it was very close but in the end I felt like we keep the squad tight and keep the players that come into the camp with trust in the number. Josh is there with the U21, but he was close and on the radar."

Thomas Tuchel looks very thoughtful when asked whether his experience of losing the 2020 Champions League final [as PSG manager] helped him after the World Cup semi-final defeat.

After a pause, he says: "That's the beauty of high-level sport, you can't always win and it makes you feel alive. Not in a very nice way, still you feel that pain of these high-pressure moments.

"As soon as you enter knockout football, it's a new level of pressure."

The door is always open, first and foremost through performance and then on the same level through behaviour and commitment to the team spirit because we built something very special.

"First, before we did the nominations in the last month, I thought we have a lot more of a continuation of the World Cup squad but then a lot of members of our World Cup squad, Reece [James], Dean Henderson, John Stones, Jordan Henderson, Djed Spence - can't be with us due to injuries so it is not like a full continuation. New players will step up because these players were crucial, crucial for us in building the brotherhood, in building the spirit and taking care of the mentality that took us a long way in the tournament.

"We will not negotiate on that, we will not give in on that and compromise on that so other players will step up, that is basically how I see this camp, and get a lot of minutes.

"My mindset is not to change too much within the formation within the match, if possible. If it doesn't make sense to play the players too much, we will not overload them. The door is always open, always open to impress, always open to take the place."

Tuchel says that "99.9% of the fans don't talk about tactical things.

"They speak about where they have watched the Mexico game, the speak about the second-half energy of the Croatia match. This is the feedback that I get. This is what we created and how it should be.

"This is what a World Cup is for, to connect with people and give them experiences that they do not forget. It makes me proud."

"I still stick with this decision and it is now time to fight for his place. He always said he is up for a fight, he always said he is up to fight for his place, especially for England so it is on him to prove and he is more than welcome in camp. We have a long camp and I am sure he will show up."

I think he has a point to prove and the same goes for Trent.
