  2. 'We have to try to sell out the Aviva'published at 21:51 BST 13 October

FT: Republic of Ireland 4-0 Kazakhstan (agg 12-0)

More from Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward speaking on RTE:

"One game at a time, you know me.

"We have to focus on the next game, which is away and we have to bring it back to the Aviva and hopefully get the job done.

"We have to try to sell out the Aviva, that has got to be the aim.

"This group of players, we are on to something and if we can get the Aviva sold out and if we can get everyone supporting what has been a group that really deserves following, we will be in a good place."

FT: Portugal 3-1 Northern Ireland (agg 7-1)

More from Northern Ireland manager Michael McArdle on BBC Sport NI: "I'm delighted for Kess.

"I knew she could bring that, and it's just great that she has had that impact in Larne and also got the reward with a goal tonight.

"She's going to add so much to the group moving forward, but so will a lot of the debutants this week, which was exciting.

"A lot of young players getting some top-level experience here tonight, which in 16 or 18 games, will be the start of that foundation to build forward.

"I think we got punished in the turnovers. We kept the ball really well in the first half, and in the second half we were a bit more untidy, but a lot of that is down to the level of the game and the effort we've put in as well.

"The game became a wee bit more open, so in those moments we just need to be braver with a higher back line as well, making sure we are cutting the space off, but the changes were made on the opposition bench and with the quality they were bringing on, it is really difficult to get ourselves prepared for that as well.

"I'm really proud but with the brave style of play we have got to be patient moving forward.

"It's been a great camp for new players to come in, but also, it is only about a dozen training sessions across the three camps, so now, I feel that, given the profile of player, the energy they are bringing, the effort that they are putting in, the condition that they are in as well to compete at this level, I am really encouraged moving forward.

"This is the start of a new move forward and the start of a new identity moving forward."

  4. 'We are excited for what is to come'published at 21:43 BST 13 October

FT: Republic of Ireland 4-0 Kazakhstan (agg 12-0)

Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward speaking on RTE:

"It was two good wins, and we are excited for what is to come.

"I am proud of the players; across the two games we have 10 goalscorers and I think that is massive.

"These players are a joy to work with, they really are. This has been a challenging cap in terms of travel, but they have put a shift in and I am delighted to be working with this group."

    Jana McCabe

There were clear improvements in tonight's performance compared to the first leg at Inver Park.

As tough as this play-off has been with the calibre of the opposition and the number of injuries that Northern Ireland have, some of the players who have been given a chance have certainly taken it.

Kess Elmore netting on her first international start will help her confidence and players such as Aimee Kerr and Emily Cassap have further developed in this window.

Certainly an exciting time to come for NI.

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe on RTE: "We've put ourselves in a really good position. The opponents we've faced, the girls have done brilliantly. It was a long flight but I'm really proud of the team and how we stuck together to get the job done.

"Once Carla came in it's a transition period and it takes a bit of time to find our feet. We learnt our lesson and we've built and grown. We've tried to get as much momentum as possible. We've put ourselves in a fantastic position.

"Two games and we're going to Brazil, but we need to lock in over the next six weeks and be ready."

  7. 'I'm really proud, but frustrated'published at 21:34 BST 13 October

Portugal 3-1 Northern Ireland (agg 7-1)

Michael McArdle, Northern Ireland manager: "There are lots of positives.

"Going toe-to-toe, we were a few moments away in the first half from going in 1-0 up, which was more than deserved from the game plan and the effort that the girls put in.

"We're very frustrated with the scoreline because the girls don't deserve that, across the two ties, especially the second half in Larne (in the 1st leg) and the whole game tonight; they've been excellent.

"There have been those moments that have went against us, moments of misfortune. We're playing a risky style of football.

"We were on the front foot from the first whistle tonight, and I couldn't be prouder of the girls. This is a real enthusiastic marker for moving forward.

"There have been a lot of changes over the last six months and the last three camps.;You're starting to see that now, and this is getting closer to the identity that I would like for us moving forward.

"We want more energy, we want more mobility, and we want to be a lot more versatile as well. I'm really proud but also really frustrated with the scoreline."

All very easy in the end for Republic of Ireland, who will now begin preparations for two big games against Poland.

As was the case in April, two big performance are needed against the Poles to see them through to another World Cup.

How Carla Ward would love to wrap the likes of Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan up in cotton wool between now and those two games.

Here's hoping everyone stays fit, although these two games have shown that the Irish have depth and players to call upon, if required.

The back four were more confident and assured tonight.

Over the two legs, you can see that Morgan was more confident than she was when she came in.

Mason and Morgan were a great partnership tonight, and both of them were quite strong in there.

Holloway being out on the left and McKenna gave them a bit more in the flanks.

I think in the second half, when Portugal made those changes, it injected a little bit of quality in their side.

Take nothing away from Northern Ireland. I think it was a really positive performance. They had some great spells in the game.

Over the two legs, getting five players to make their debuts is brilliant; I think Michael McArdle will have a big headache for the next camp.

It is a really exciting time for the squad going forward.

Denise O'Sullivan's goal unsurprisingly gets the loudest cheer of the night even if it was probably the easiest of the four!

She barely celebrates and races with the ball back to the halfway line for a quick kick off, sensing there are more goals in this for her side.

It's a great goal from Lucy Quinn!

Tyler Toland could go down and win a penalty but stays on her feet to fizz a cross to the back post.

It falls to Lucy Quinn, who takes a couple of touches and fires a brilliant strike into the far corner.
