The first Saturday of September is in the books, and boy it was stuffed with drama.

Stoppage-time winners, red cards, wonder goals... you can bank on the Championship to deliver.

There's more fun to come this evening as table-topping Swansea will seek to stay there as they welcome Wrexham down the road while tomorrow lunchtime Wolves head to Birmingham at high noon for a mouthwatering West Midlands derby.

There's a big game still to come, with Swansea against Wrexham having a derby feel, even though the cities are more than 100 miles apart.

And this particular meeting comes with increased stakes because both clubs have eyes on the Premier League.

The Swans head into the game top of the table while Wrexham have again spent big and made a solid enough start themselves.

Millwall

After the 4-0 win over Bolton, Millwall head coach Alex Neil spoke to BBC Radio London:

"It's been a tough week, we lost Femi Azeez at the end of the window, had two disappointing defeats and more importantly lost quite a few players in terms of availability.

"It was important we tried to bounce back and get a result. I thought we did the basics well.

"I felt the starting XI was more than capable of winning the game and I was really pleased with some of the younger players who came on and dug in.

"A lot of guys stood up today. Lyndon Dykes led the line really well. He won nearly every header. We need to be effective more than pretty at the moment."

On the late red-card for Jenson Metcalfe: "I thought it was a ludicrous decision - to go straight to red cards. It's a full-blooded sport. Jenson reacted, it's a bit of handbags. It's disappointing because now we lose Jenson for three games."

On injuries to Casper De Norre and Josh Coburn: "They certainly won't be seen for a week or two."

QPR

After the 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, QPR head coach Julien Stephan spoke to BBC Radio London:

"We played a fantastic second half with a lot of intensity and a lot of quality collectively. We created enough chances to score a minimum, one goal but the first half we were too much in between.

"I said at half time, we needed to play with full energy and full intensity because when we do that, we can compete against all the teams in the league.

"That's what we showed in the second half. It's something we have to learn from this game, but I'm very proud of how the players played in the second half."

Sheffield United

After the 3-1 defeat at home to Norwich, Sheffield United head coach Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"The concession of the goals, really poor. The three goals that we have conceded, I thought the second goal really changed the flow of the game.

"We didn't get the detail right on the first goal, they are good players, they are a good team, well stocked, competition in every place and they have been building.

"I always knew it was going to be a tough afternoon. I'm disappointed because for the majority of those challenges that we have had against them we have come out on top, but we didn't deserve to come out on top today.

"The second goal, for me, is a real turning point."

Norwich City

Norwich City boss Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk afterthe win at Bramall Lane: "An important [win]. We weren't lucky the last couple of weeks, we had the West Brom and Stoke game, both we should have won if you see all the stats of the game and we get zero points out of that.

"It was important to keep our level and raise our level.

"What the boys did today against a good opponent, I'm proud about how the team played, how we could keep possession.

"They were pressing us, we created chances in an away game and so many chances and good chances - and scored three really good goals."

Cardiff City

Brian Barry-Murphy speaking to BBC Radio Wales:

"We didn't play well enough in the first half as a team and I feel disappointed to lose two games in such quick succession.

"In the second half we created chances but just didn't take them, we started the game well and I thought we were going to score but didn't.

"The second goal took away any momentum we were building, we have to be ruthless and take our chances.

"It's never easy in football, we'll bounce back and give it everything next week in training."

Portsmouth

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"I’m delighted with the result and there’s particularly some relief in terms of the way in which the game went.

"Recently we’ve dominated games and not quite had enough at the top end of the pitch and today was the opposite.

"We probably conceded a bit too much possession but overall I’m pretty pleased that we showed we could win a different way as well."

Burnley

Burnley fell to a late comeback from Bristol City, with manager Nicky Hayen telling BBC Radio Lancashire:

“I think it was a difficult afternoon. You have to be honest in that. It wasn’t a nice game to see when you’re leading 1-0, 10 minutes before the end of the game.

“It’s also a quality to push this over the line and to win and to win ugly. This is something we didn’t do. You just have to be more ruthless, be stronger in duels, win second balls. At the moment, we’re too soft and easy in that.

“I know it’s already a long time [since the last league win] and, of course, everyone wanted to play to win. It’s not because of bad intentions, but you have to keep the structure and in the end, throw your body in front of the ball.”

Watford

After the 1-0 defeat at West Brom, Watford boss Alessio Dionisi spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I thought we deserved a draw, but it was difficult for us to find the score and without that it's impossible to win.

"It's not easy at this moment – because of our situation with new players arriving a few days ago.

"We had a lot of chances but no scores. Playing against West Brom away is not easy and it's important to find positives in the situation."

West Bromwich Albion

After the 1-0 win over Watford, West Bromwich Albion boss James Morrison spoke to BBC Radio WM:

"I wasn't really too happy in the game. It was a contrast to what we've previously seen [in other games], but we stuck together out there, you could see a team fighting for each other and sometimes you've got to win ugly.

"We looked good in spells. Watford caused us some problems, but we fought for that clean sheet which is pleasing. I've been asking for it for a couple of games."

On Jimmy-Jay Morgan's strong start to the season: "JJ was itching for that goal, you could see on Wednesday he was a bit frustrated in not getting chances. It was not just his attacking play [that was good] but also his defence and closing down."

Derby County

After a 3-0 defeat at West Ham, Derby County head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

"After a slow start I thought we grew into the game really well, and coming in at half time I always felt we would get opportunities.

"I was hoping that with the positive changes made as the second half went on that we would make a better impact, so I’m disappointed that we didn’t really create any clear cut chances. But I thought there was a lot in that second half that we can take away from today.

"The two late goals were really disappointing, and it certainly flattered them a little bit."

West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo told BBC Radio London after a solid home win:

"It’s very good to have games where we achieved good results and good performances, which is so positive.

"There is always that concern [being just 1-0 up for so long] but at the same time if you can defend it well, a clean sheet is so important for us.

"It took some time, being resilient, staying in the game and waiting for the right moments, but it’s positive managing the game.

"And when we had space we did well to kill the game."

Portsmouth

During Portsmouth's first home win of the season over Cardiff there was an incident involving Bluebirds defender Krystian Bielik and a home spectator.

The game was stopped for around two minutes after it appeared that the player and fan were involved in a physical altercation.

At the time the supporter was ejected from the stadium with both captains and managers spoken to by the officials.

Pompey head coach John Mousinho admitted that he did not see the incident live but had been informed about what did happen by the referee.

"I haven’t seen it personally but the referee said that as Krystian went to get the ball one of the supporters struck him or slapped him

"It’s not a good incident and we can’t be having that. We want to create a really difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park and it doesn’t need to tip over to that extent.

"We apologise to the player and to Cardiff and will make sure we try and cut it out."

• Stoke have kept a clean sheet in back-to-back Championship home matches for the first time since March 2025, with their 4-0 win against Charlton today their largest at the bet365 Stadium since last November (5-1 v Bristol City).
• Portsmouth have won back-to-back league games against Cardiff for the first time since January - December 1972 (3 in a row), with the Bluebirds now one of two sides without a win in the Championship this season (also Burnley).
• QPR have now lost each of their past six Championship games against Middlesbrough, their joint-longest such run against any side in the second tier of English football (also v Bristol City and Preston).
• Callum Lang scored both of Preston’s goals in their 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers, the first time he has scored multiple times in a league match since netting four for Portsmouth against Coventry in December 2024.
• Aaron Ramsey scored Burnley’s only goal in their 2-1 defeat against Bristol City, after his older brother Jacob Ramsey scored Newcastle’s equalising goal against Bournemouth in the Premier League. It is the first time that both brothers have scored league goals on the same day.

Bristol City

After coming from behind late-on to win 2-1 at Burnley, Bristol City manager Michael Skubala told BBC Radio Bristol:

"I’m very happy, very happy. Not just because of the three wins, but again the character of the group.

"I thought the players were magnificent today, and the week's been hard for us because of the travel.

"You know, up to Preston and then back up to Burnley. It's been a really tough week for the lads, but I think they've been great.

"I thought they scored a little bit against the run of play and then after the goal, I thought we were the better team deserved the win. So it's always nice when you get the win when you think you deserved it."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg spoke to BBC Radio Tees after Boro's 1-0 win at QPR:

"At the end the game showed every side of what we can do. The first 65 minutes was brilliant. We had four massive chances to kill the game off.

"You always have the worry when you don't score but we defended very good, credit to the defenders.

"They created very few chances, they had some shots, but they mainly had one big chance.

"It was almost everything, it shows what this team is about. We showed there's a lot of character in this team.

"This team is going to get really better and this win is a big one."

Southampton

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:

"It is a game that I would have expected here, you have a lot of long balls you have to deal with.

"We could have bought the ball down a bit quicker, especially in the first half, and then we had some good spells and went 1-0 up in the game.

"And when you are 1-0 in a game like today, you know there will be chances that come up in the second half and we had more than enough to make it 2-0. And if you don’t, then it’s a one-goal game and we need to be better to grind out the game towards the end.

"And that’s the frustrating part about today, because these games you need to win 1-0 and bring them home."

Lincoln City

After the Imps came from behind to ensure a 1-1 draw with Southampton, Lincoln City head coach Tom Shaw told BBC Radio Lincolnshire:

"I thought the fight in the group and some of the new players showed the spirit that we know the players from last year have got, so that was incredibly encouraging. I feel a little bit frustrated that we have not taken more than a point to be honest.

"The feel of it and the stats and the data back that up – we were good value for the three points.

"But it’s important for all of us, the coaches, players, fans and everyone, that we keep a bit of context.

"We played Southampton here, who were set to go to the Premier League last year. So for our boys to make it as uncomfortable as they did in quite a few spells of that game, I’m very proud."
