Southampton sit fourth in the Championship table with two games to go
Southampton came from behind twice and moved to 20 games unbeaten across all competitions as they drew with Bristol City at St Mary's.
This result leaves Southampton fourth in the Championship table, three points off the top two places with two league games still to play. Bristol City are 11th with games against Birmingham City and Stoke City still to come.
The Robins struck first inside the opening five minutes as Scott Twine's curling cross found the head of Saints defender Ryan Manning who nodded the ball into his own net.
Saints drew level before the break when Manning managed to make amends for his error with a curled free-kick into the area where Cyle Larin finished from close range.
The visitors retook the lead after an hour when Sam Bell glanced a header into the net from a corner, but Saints found another equaliser with 15 minutes remaining as Ross Stewart headed home Tom Fellows' cross.
Southampton play at Wembley on Saturday in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.
Southampton were dealt a blow just before kick-off as Jack Stephens pulled up in the warm-up and had to be replaced in the starting line-up by Nathan Wood.
Bristol City had a great chance to open the scoring just three minutes into proceedings, Delano Burgzorg broke in behind with just Daniel Peretz to beat but the forward's shot was well saved by the retreating goalkeeper.
Two minutes later the visitors did manage to find a breakthrough as Twine curled a ball into the box towards Sam Bell but Saints defender Manning managed to divert the ball into his own net.
The hosts levelled the game up just before half an hour as Manning curled a sweeping free-kick into the area from outside of the box and found Larin who poked the ball home in off the left-hand post.
Southampton had a bright start to the second half as Larin found Cameron Archer outside the box and the forward spun before drilling an effort towards the bottom right-hand corner which was well saved by Radek Vitek.
Roy Hodgson's side then found another goal in the 63rd minute when Bell glanced a header into the back of the net from a Tomi Horvat cross.
But Saints found another equaliser with two of the substitutes combining as Fellows dashed into the box down the right and chipped a cross to the back post where Stewart rose highest to header the ball into the back of the net.
With five minutes remaining Shea Charles found space in the middle of the box and directed a shot goalwards which forced a fine save out of Vitek who kept the score level.
Saints 'didn't have the best of starts' - Eckert
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert speaking to media after the game:
"There's so many games in April and the expectations have been going up game after game and that's a credit to the players.
"There's no easy game in the Championship and credit to Bristol [City] for such a good game, they made it difficult for us today.
"We had chances to win it and we have taken those in previous games but we couldn't tonight so we take the point and move on.
"The goals that we have conceded have always been very different and today we didn't have the best of starts, sometimes you just need to accept that it is what it is.
"We still managed to find a way back into the game and that speaks of the players and the group."
Eckert: "Put it to bed, onto City"
'Best performance of my time at the club' - Hodgson
Bristol City boss Roy Hodgson speaking to media after the game:
"I enjoyed watching it and I enjoyed our performance, the players should be very proud of their performance.
"We created more clear cut chances throughout the game and had a lot of the ball, I'm very happy with the point but on another day I think we could have had all three.
"For me it was the best performance of my short time at the club and I hope that the team have two more performances like that in them so we can get some results in the final games.
"Today was one of those games where you'd be hard pushed to criticise anybody."
Hodgson: "We were worthy of a victory"
