He gets another go with a cross from the left, but again Rovers can clear.

Tony Mowbray said before the game that his Blackburn team would try and make life difficult and pry on the fact Wolves haven't won many games in the past 12 months.

The 62-year-old won't be too displeased with what he's seen so far. Rovers look very competitive early on.

A first effort of the match and it goes Blackburn's way. Ryan Alebiosu swings in a cross from the right and Dapo Afolayan meets it with his head but can only nod it over the bar.

He was slightly leaning back but it's a sight of goal for Rovers.

The last time Wolves played Blackburn on the opening day of a season was in the 2003-04 Premier League campaign.

Blackburn thrashed Wolves 5-1 that day at Ewood Park.

Wolves would love a bit of long-awaited opening day revenge.

It's a raucous Molineux tonight.

Good pressing by Wolves, it must be said.

Blackburn win a free-kick midway inside their own half for some brief respite from an energetic start by Cesar Peixoto's side.

Dapo Afolayan then runs Kieran Trippier into the channel but Wolves survive.

Plenty of early possession for Wolves and boos from the travelling Blackburn fans as former Burnley man Kieran Trippier has his first touch.

Wolves are in their Old Gold commemorative 150th anniversary kit with the city of Wolverhampton’s coat of arms in place of their usual club crest.

Blackburn are donning their new white away strip with red and blue stripes down the middle.

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray says he is "really excited" for this Championship season back at the club he managed for five years between 2017 and 2022.

But the 62-year-old, who overcame bowel cancer after being diagnosed in February 2024, is fully aware of the size of task at hand at Ewood Park.

"It is a big job," Mowbray told BBC Sport. "We have lost some players from last season, and the team is not as strong in numbers.

"The team needs more goals, a bit more magic – players that can get behind the opposition and score.

"It's about improving the individual and collectively making the group tighter and turning the small margins your way.

"Blackburn had a lot of draws, so we have to turn them into victories. I genuinely feel I can instil confidence into footballers."

Wolves head coach Cesar Peixoto says his side will "embrace" the pressure of being among the favourites for automatic promotion - and is looking forward to "showing the world" how his teams can play in his first job in English football.

"It's normal. You have to embrace it. It's a positive pressure for me," he told BBC Radio WM.

"It's important we know the club, our team, our players, our big goal and we have to work hard to be ready to fight for three points in all of these games.

"When we don't win - stay organised, have a clear idea of the game, stay humble.

"To stay in first to get promoted - it's our big goal."
