    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Willian Pacho was very nearly robbed in his own area after a risky pass back into the six-yard box but shows good composure to spin clear of pressure and the launch the ball forward.

The lesser-spotted Enner Valencia is then freed down the right for Ecaudor but blazes his effort well over the bar from a tight angle.

There's been no contest between the veterans of both sides. Jimenez with the goal and great plays aside that has been such an impact for Mexico. Enner Valencia has struggled to have an impact here.

  3. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Decent spell of possession from Ecuador as the home fans whistle and boo.

Mexico are moving around in defence pretty smoothly, side-to-side, like table footballers and Pedro Vite eventually lashes over from 25 yards when accepting they can't get through.

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Big Efan is right, but I don't think it's just altitude, it's attitude too.

Getting a result in this scenario is going to require incredible discipline and mental fortitude. There's quite simply no hiding place out there.

  5. 'England and Mexico would be a mouthwatering clash'published at 04:09 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

    Efan Ekoku
Former Nigeria striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

England and Mexico would be a mouthwatering clash. They have to get past DR Congo first and England probably are the favourites.

But, if they do advance, altitude would definitely come into play.

  6. Postpublished at 47 mins

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Mexico's Jorge Sanchez drifts into space on the right and is picked out, advances into the box but can only curl an angled shot well past the angle of post and bar.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 04:07 BST

Angelo Preciado and Yaimar Medina are coming on for Ecuador with Joel Ordonez and Alan Franco making way.

That's two defenders for two defenders, but will it shore things up?

What an amazing half of football. One of the best of the tournament so far from Mexico. They'll cause England a lot of trouble should they advance...

  12. Mexico have been 'fierce'published at 04:01 BST

    HT: Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

If I was going to use one word to describe the Mexico play it would be fierce. They've been sharp, precise and had courage on the ball. Great determination as well when they're defending.

Ecuador have just been outplayed, the only two standouts have been Yeboah and Angulo. They've been outplayed and outthought by Mexico.

  13. Mexico half way therepublished at 03:59 BST

    HT: Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Mexico have now not allowed a goal in the first half of their past 15 World Cup matches, the second longest streak in history.

It's been 16 years since they last conceded a first-half goal, against Argentina. When Gilberto Mora was in nappies.

Incidentally the longest streak belongs to England - 19 straight games from 1982 to 1998.

How they'd love the chance to end that record at 1am next Monday.

It has been a splendid game I’m enjoying it very much

As an England fan, I'm not 'really, realy worried', Greg (03:41 BST). Mexico are a decent side and won't be easy playing them at their home should England win tonight. But England have players used to playing big games in hostile stadiums. Try believing in them

    Sarah, Hove

Mexico have improved game-on-game. If they win this - as is likely, they will provide a serious test at altitude for England or DR Congo

  15. 'Mexico have been able to mix up the play'published at 03:56 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

    Efan Ekoku

One great thing we've seen from Mexico so far is that they've mixed things up a bit. When Ecuador have weathered the storm, Mexico have been able to mix up the play, they've had some really nice varieties. It just leaves Ecuador's defence guessing.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 03:51 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

    An incredible half of football.

    It's been so intense I feel like I've done a 5k.

Urged on by their fans, Mexico flew out of the blocks and two goals in nine minutes from Julian Quinones, driving down the left and then lashing inside the post, and then Raul Jimenez, pouncing on a loose ball, getting it back and then firing a rocket into the top corner from 20 yards, have them bound for the last-16 as things stand.

Ecuador looked rattled, by the intensity, the atmosphere, perhaps the entire trip, but have also spurned plenty of decent set-piece opportunities while John Yeboah clipped the post and saw another fine shot saved by Raul Rangel.

The hour's delay to kick-off ramped things up a couple of notches for the hosts, I suspect.

Ecuador are not quite out of this, but they'll need to get one back, and quickly.

  18. 'Ecuador's backline not looking great'published at 03:48 BST

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

    Efan Ekoku
Former Nigeria striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Super cutback from Sanchez, waiting and waiting to find his team-mates and looking for Jimenez. He found him but they couldn't convert in the end.

Again though, Ecuador's backline is not looking great. They are really shaky.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 45+1 min

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Alan Franco of Ecuador becomes the first man in the book after a late challenge in midfield.

  20. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

Another glimpse of goal for Raul Jimenez as the ball is cut back to him on the volley on the edge of the box but he can't hit it cleanly and it skids past the post.

We're into FIVE added minutes at the end of the half.
