Robertson breaks Games record to win cycling gold

England cyclist Matthew Robertson broke the Commonwealth Games record for a second time to earn gold in the men's C1-C3 3,000m individual pursuit.

Robertson, 27, had already taken the Games record in the morning qualification session, only for Scotland's Fin Graham to break it and set up an intriguing gold-medal match.

In the afternoon racing, Robertson set another record of three minutes and 22.597 seconds to put the pressure on his training partner.

Graham went out hard to try and beat the new record but his energy sapped and Robertson claimed the gold medal.

"That was probably the hardest end to a bike race I've ever watched," said Robertson.

"It was so close. I knew roughly what times Fin could do because we train together all the time, and I knew I'd done a good ride, even without looking at the clock, just from how it felt. It was really nerve-wracking watching him."

Meanwhile, Matthew Bostock won the Isle of Man's first gold medal since 2006 as he held off Australia's Oliver Bleddyn to win the men's 40km points race.

And Joe Truman took silver in the men's 1,000m time trial behind winner Leigh Hoffman of Australia.

England team-mate Kadeena Cox, 35, had to settle for silver in the women's C4-C5 1,000m time trial.

Australia's Tara Neyland bettered her own world record time by a full second to claim gold in one minute 09:667 seconds.

However, it is a first Commonwealth medal for Cox, who has missed two Games because of injuries.

"I'm really proud of myself to go out there and execute what was only my second kilo, and it was so close," Cox said.

"We've got the World Championship in three months time so I'll go do what I didn't do today and then it's onto LA. LA is going to be a really big one for me, I'll probably retire there.

"I'm just hoping to go back and do the job. Be the Kadeena that I started off as."
