    Hampshire draw at Surrey

So Surrey are back into the top two in the table and Hampshire are off the bottom, but they'll have to sit back this weekend and see how their rivals fare as they go in search of wins - something Surrey and Hampshire only have one of apiece in their opening seven matches.

Gutsy batting display by Hampshire to save the game, but a word on Dan Lawrence - 408 runs in three innings for Surrey against Hampshire at the Oval from 301 balls in under five days is some going.

Thank you for your company across all four days of this lone County Championship game of the week.

We've had to get through 92 overs of rain together along the way but all your messages made it good fun.

We're back at 10.30 BST on Friday to do it all over again.. just with eight-times the fun.

    See you then!

Surrey batted on just too long this morning - good to see Sibley scoring his ton but I think Burns should have put team first?

    Rob, Barbados

Sport is always a game of inches, Rob. If James Fuller had holed out first ball on day three rather than hitting 18 off four balls from Will Jacks then Surrey might have been celebrating an innings win by this point.

If they'd set a target of 280 then Hampshire might well have fancied that chase with very little to lose in the grand scheme of things.

    We'll never know. Maddening game.

  4. 'Little steps in the right direction'published at 17:08 BST

    Surrey 421 & 259-5 dec v Hampshire 333 & 101-2 - match drawn

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

I'm pleased for Hampshire because they've shown fight in both the first and the second innings.

And there are positives, there is no doubt about it. Highest first-class score this season, two batting bonus points. There's a lot to take.

It's only a draw but it does take Hampshire off the bottom of the table and that hasn't happened for quite a few weeks.

It's little steps, it's in the right direction. There's still half the season to go but I think there has been lots of good signs from a Hampshire point of view.

  5. 'Weather and Hampshire's good batting frustrates Surrey'published at 17:04 BST

    Surrey 421 & 259-5 dec v Hampshire 333 & 101-2 - match drawn

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Surrey will be frustrated by this. They played a lot of the cricket in this game.

But a combination of the weather and Hampshire's good batting in that first innings and Orr and Lehmann means this game ends with a draw.

Surrey pick up 15 points, Hampshire pick up 13 points.

For Dan Lawrence, he will obviously be disappointed Surrey didn't get a positive result but what a game that man has had.

  6. HAMPSHIRE DRAW AGAINST SURREYpublished at 17:00 BST

    Surrey 421 & 259-5 dec v Hampshire 333 & 101-2 - match drawn

    They have shaken hands.

A fine rearguard effort from Hampshire has yielded 13 points to lift them off the bottom of County Championship Division One.

Surrey are second with their 15 points, but both sides have just one win apiece from their opening seven matches.

It's not for the lack of trying, particularly from Dan Lawrence who bludgeoned 218 from 190 balls in Surrey's first innings 421 and then 101 from 64 this morning as they added 259-5dec, with Dom Sibley unbeaten on 105.

Hampshire had to dig deep on day three for their 333 with Jake Lehmann (69) and Delano Potgieter (84*) staving off the threat of the follow-on and ensuring the second and third batting points of the summer for their side.

It's ebbed and flowed, and so did the rain on the middle two days, but another enthralling Championship game, the last at the Oval until August, is in the books.

    Hampshire 99-2 - require 348 to win

James Taylor concedes a leg bye to Jake Lehmann to bring up the Hampshire 100, not that the milestone is celebrated.

A single jabbed past point by Ali Orr follows and it feels very much as though James Taylor is killing time until the clock strikes 5pm...

What a game. This is proper cricket. Proper red ball batting from Hampshire here to save the game. Surrey will have had plenty of opportunity to get them out - sides have won similar games with no rain. Love to see a pair dig in like the Hamps pair.

    Ed, Leeds

Shake hands, time to call it a well earned draw.

    Mat, Hampshire

Well done Hampshire. We are not a great team at the moment but they have really put in a shift - every one of them - over the course of this match. Well done!

    Paul, Lincs

It's not over just yet. Emphasis on yet...

    Hampshire 99-2 - require 348 to win

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

They've got to keep concentrating here though, Orr and Lehmann. They've done a terrific job so far.

But what you don't want to do at this point is slap a half-volley straight to extra cover or something.

Because then that would just open the door a touch for Surrey. New batter and then you could knock a new batter over early.

    Hampshire 99-2 - require 348 to win

James Taylor will get the action back underway after that thoroughly unnecessary interlude.

We might be waiting until 5pm for handshakes, or perhaps the start of the final hour with 16 overs remaining...

They're having a drinks break at the end of the over, no handshakes yet.

Rory Burns is probably discussing just when to concede they are not going to take eight wickets in the 21 overs which in theory remain.

Only takes one ball to take a wicket. There are 126 remaining.

Hants can still win, plus I’m the optimist of the year

    Nick, Hants

Just over 10 an over needed, no problem. Can we borrow Dan for an hour or so?

    Adamski, Winchester

Ha, that's nearly 12 an over needed now. Anyway, they might be shaking hands soon...

    Hampshire 99-2 - require 348 to win

Will Jacks returns for what could be, in theory, the final over, if Rory Burns has seen enough...

Ali Orr sweeps to the fine leg rope for his ninth four and that's his second First Class half-century for Hampshire, from 116 balls.

  14. 'Surrey not had a settled bowling attack'published at 16:49 BST

    Hampshire 99-2 - require 348 to win

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

They've just struggled to take 20 wickets in the game and yes, they've played on some flat surfaces.

And they haven't really had the same bowling attack for any game.

Those three Championship-winning years, it was sort of the same attack throughout and anybody who did come in didn't really miss a beat.

They haven't really been able to settle the bowling attack this season.

  15. Postpublished at 16:47 BST

    Hampshire 95-2 - require 348 to win

James Taylor continues but his third delivery is dispatched to the rope by Jake Lehmann with perfect timing through the covers.

Taylor gets one to nip back and hit the thigh guard from the next but it's always too high.

    22 overs left.

  16. 'Who said we needed rain?'published at 16:45 BST

    Hampshire 91-2 - require 348 to win

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Weather? We didn't need the weather. Who said we needed the help with the showers? Who said that?

Haven't needed any help like that. They've done it all on their own, those brave men of Hampshire.

One thing I would like to see is Ali Orr getting a half-century.

  17. Postpublished at 16:43 BST

    Hampshire 91-2 - require 348 to win

Ali Orr defends off the back foot from Will Jacks but gets away with a leading edge which drops safely into the off side not too far from Daw Lawrence at sill mid-off from the second.

He clips the fourth nicely through square leg to the rope to move to 48*.

    23 overs remain.

  18. Postpublished at 16:41 BST

    Hampshire 87-2 - require 348 to win

James Taylor is back after that burst from Reece Topley.

Jake Lehmann greets him with a lovely drive which isn't perfectly timed for once and has to settle for a single.

Ali Orr picks up another with a glance into the leg side via his pads for a leg bye.

24 overs to come. 8 wickets still needed or 11 an over required for a Hampshire win.

  19. 'Surrey will be frustrated'published at 16:39 BST

    Hampshire 87-2 - require 348 to win

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Surrey will be frustrated. They were pushing for the follow-on, didn't quite manage that.

Then they batted brilliantly and Hampshire couldn't bowl at Dan Lawrence this morning.

They took those two quick wickets and then nothing has really occurred since then.

  20. Postpublished at 16:37 BST

    Hampshire 85-2 - require 348 to win

Will Jacks is back into the attack and almost gets a breakthrough with his second ball as Jake Lehmann comes forward in defence.

Must have been an inside edge onto the pad.

Lehmann and Ali Orr pick up a single apiece off the over.

    25 more to come.
