    Best shots - Gay hits 60 to guide England out of early trouble

    Not to undermine the efforts of Harry Brook, Dan Lawrence and Jamie Smith, but England are in this position in no small part to Emilio Gay. He looked uncomfortable at times yesterday, and really had to grind his 60 runs out - which is exactly what you want from your opener.

    Harry Brook made 75 from 97 balls with just six fours and a fairly restrained innings by his standards.

    It's 11 Tests without a century for him but he's averaged over 40 in that time.

    I've liked Harry Brook this series. We didn't see any run down the wickets. Last night was fantastic Test cricket. It was really tough Test cricket.

    Those last 12 balls from Muhammad Abbas were as hard as you're going to get. He tried to hang on there. That shows development in the player.

    I think we've seen some real maturity in his innings. It's a shame that he was run out because if he got a century playing like he has then it would have been very valuable. He'll be kicking himself.

  8. Have we seen a slightly different post-Bazball version of Harry Brook at Edgbaston? He played with composure and real authority yesterday in difficult batting conditions during a time his side needed him to occupy the crease.

    A bit of a brain fade to run himself out this morning but possibly forgivable given how he had applied himself otherwise.

    Pakistan's players have just trudged off the field at Edgbaston with an air of resignation.

    England scored 143 runs in the morning session and have pretty much extinguished Pakistan's hopes of getting anything out of this Test match.

    So Andy should probably think about making other plans on Saturday...

  10. We began this session with Andy in Surrey wondering about his day four tickets. He needs some rain, I fear.

    It's England's session. Pakistan have made a big effort but not with great results. They have to keep going at it but England are in a good position to keep bossing this Test match.

    There were those two soft dismissals but England have only tightened their grip on this game.
