    They made Bethell captain in the Ireland T20 series - considering the dearth of likely candidates (and there is a dearth, right?) they wouldn't think about promoting him to full-time now, would they...? Would they...!?

    Why not Ben Duckett? Seems to be one of very few out there actually trying for us at the minute. Got the experience and aside from Root is our best batsman.

    Can't look beyond Joe Root, his the only player I feel is deserving of a place every test match. the rest are all replaceable.

    Of the county captains, someone who is often overlooked but is a good captain and a fine keeper is John Simpson at Sussex. Lack of succession planning has been another Bazball failing. Simpson as keeper and Sam Curran as skipper.

    If we're looking at county captains with international experience there's only two reasonable options: Haseeb Hameed and Ollie Robinson. Neither are inspiring options but both not awful suggestions.

    Foakes is 33, and is currently out of the Surrey side as he managed to injure himself bowling in April.

    I'm going left-field. Now more than ever we need a steady, classy presence to settle things and rebuild from. That is not Harry Brook. Nor anyone else in the team except Root, who has already tried... So bring back Ben Foakes. And make him captain. Bold but effective.
