Pakistan's struggles with the opening partnerships continues with scores of 0, 0 (both innings at Headingley) and 5 (today).
Their issues with the opening partnership has been a recurring theme in the last few years, averaging 21.4 in 44 innings in Tests since the start of 2023.
Of all Test playing nations, only Ireland (16.3) have a lower average than Pakistan for the opening partnership in the timeline.

So much for facing Ollie Robinson being a little easier.
Abdullah Shafique is beaten by a couple of absolute rippers which deviate off the pitch, and Jamie Smith has got his work cut out standing up to the stumps.

Pakistan are doing alright, but they're not particularly going anywhere.
Technically, they are up for the challenge.
Abdullah Shafique sensibly gets off strike with a quick single and leaves Azan Awais to survive the rest of the over. It mostly consists of him swishing the bat outside off stump and hoping he doesn't edge one of them.

Abdullah Shafique is in at three and gets an absolute ripper that rears up and pins him on the glove. He looks a little dazed as the ball lands safely on the leg side and stutters through for a single.

I think when Shan Masood watches this again, his foot movement is minimal.
That is a full ball, and he goes nowhere. The nip does for him.

There's still plenty in this surface and Jofra Archer makes the most of it. A full delivery, just over 90mph and with minimal foot movement, Shan Masood can only nick it through to the keeper.

A decent start for England. They know if they keep whacking length, then something will happen.
Azan Awais takes a quick single from the last ball of the over. He was batting quite far out of his crease which helped him with the lbw, so Jamie Smith has come up to the stumps now.
I doubt he'll be doing the same for Jofra Archer, however...
What a waste.
Feels like Jamie Smith has got to do better there - it struck the batter's pad miles outside the line.

It was an entertaining first hour from Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson, before the latter holed out off the spin of Ali Usman.

Jofra Archer also starts his spell with a no-ball, before recovering well and is immediately clocking speeds of 88mph.
The contrast between his pace and Ollie Robinson's could present a challenge for the Pakistan openers.

Technically, the batsman will be challenged and mentally, he will not give you too many gifts, so you will not get off to a flyer.
