    Best shots - Gay hits 60 to guide England out of early trouble

    Solid summer Test cricket from England. Gay looks capable if he can just get one big score to boost confidence. Cox and Lawrence have increased batting competition and a really good bowling unit has been established. Calmness has been brought by Root. So B+ grade.

    Ollie Robinson is chuckling because, having thrown in a bouncer, he's given away four byes. They will go down against Jordan Cox, who had no chance when standing up to the stumps.

    There has to be a signal in those situations, right? Give the keeper the nod that the bouncer is coming.

    Jofra Archer doesn't seem to have much luck, he always seems to beat the bat.

    Shan Masood misses one drive to Jofra Archer but makes contact later in the over to take four runs through the covers. He's an experienced pro. His series has been as disappointing as any of the Pakistan batters.

    This has been the worst English test summer in my 25 years watching England. Lots of poor cricket vs NZ followed by the embarrassing scenes on Stokes’ last day, and then an insipid, utterly one sided series against a shambolic Pakistan. 2027 cannot come soon enough.

    Ollie Robinson's first over of the day is little different to all that has come before this summer. The ball jags around, always there and there abouts, but no edge on this occasion.

    Ben Stokes was a glorious player, but English cricket’s culture has crumbled. I’m not a fan of how his retirement came about, releasing the news mid-game and moving himself to open. It’s fantastic to have someone like Root steady the ship and give the next generation time to bed in.

    I worry that with Joe Root being captain, we have lost the most reliable batsman. However, currently in English cricket we seem to be missing a Test level player who can lead and be a reliable player.

    After a bit of chaos in the winter, I don't think it's been a successful summer as they lost the important series against New Zealand. I know that there has been some successes with people coming in. I like what I've seen in the past couple of weeks. Pakistan aren't the best team in the world but there's been some good stuff.

    I hope Joe Root will have his moment next summer as England captain. But, I would still love Ben Stokes to be the captain.

    The first two days at Edgbaston have felt pretty low key. But the unmistakable signs of an English Test have started to poke through this morning: a group dressed as Roman soldiers, pints being supped at a pub next to the ground at breakfast time, and plenty more touts outside grafting.

    Pakistan will resume on 52-2, still trailing by 268 runs. They need to wipe out that deficit just to make England bat again.

    Pakistan haven't scored 200 in the series. The longest they have lasted across an innings is 50.5 overs.
