Double gold for England in 3x3 basketball finals

England enjoyed double gold in the 3x3 basketball as the men's team retained their Commonwealth Games title from four years ago.

They defeated Australia 19-17 in Glasgow in a repeat of the 2022 final, with Scotland taking bronze.

England also secured a gold medal in the women's wheelchair 3x3 with an 18-10 win over Scotland, upgrading from the bronze they won four years ago in Birmingham.

In the men's wheelchair final England took the silver medal after a 19-13 defeat by Australia, with Scotland losing out to Canada in the bronze medal match.

There was another gold for Australia in the women's final in the final 3x3 event of the Games as they got the better of Uganda with a convincing 21-11 victory.

The men's team, made up of Evan Walshe, Jamell Anderson, Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye and Ashley Hamilton got the better of New Zealand in the semi-final to reach the final against an Australia side out for revenge after their 2022 defeat.

It was a tight and closely-fought contest throughout with neither side more than three points ahead until the closing stages when Anderson, who was part of the 2022 gold medal-winning team, and Lautier-Ogunleye pushed England into an 18-14 lead that proved too much for Australia to pull back.

Lautier-Ogunleye top-scored for England in the final with seven points and the win was a special moment for Hamilton who was making his Commonwealth Games debut at the age of 37 after missing the 2018 and 2022 events.

The England wheelchair women's team of Charlotte Moore, Lucy Robinson, Joy Haizelden and Jade Atkin enjoyed a comfortable 18-10 semi-final win over Canada to make it into the final against host nation Scotland.

They repeated the same scoreline to secure the gold medal to improve on their third-placed finish in Birmingham four years ago when Moore, Haizelden and Atkin were also in the side.

However the wheelchair men's side lost out 19-13 to Australia who retained their title.

Oscar Knight top-scored for England with six points, Thomas Harvey scored four, with the other points coming from Peter Cusack (two) and James Hazell (one).

England's women, semi-finalists in 2022, were beaten on Tuesday by Jamaica to end their hopes of glory as Australia powered their way to the gold medal.
