In August 1808 Napoleon Bonaparte possessed the largest European empire since the days of ancient Rome. He was to come under new pressure, however, when the British army landed on Portugal's West coast led by the junior general Arthur Wellesley.

Peter and Dan report from where it all began 200 years ago, a stone citadel held by the Portuguese resistance. The British landing marked the start of the Peninsula War, a five year conflict that spread right across Spain and Portugal.

At the end of this video, Peter also outlines the four key battles to be covered in At War With Wellington.
