
At least 6 protesters shot dead in Sudan
At least six people have been shot dead at a pro-democracy in Sudan as crowds rally to mark three years since the uprising that ousted former president Omar al-Bashir.
At least six people have reportedly been shot dead during a nationwide pro-democracy protest in Sudan. The demonstrations are to mark three years since the uprising that ousted former president Omar al-Bashir. Internet services have been cut in the country’s capital, Khartoum, in what appears to be an effort to disrupt the protests.
In DRC, an official burial ceremony has taken place in the capital Kinshasa, for the independence leader Patrice Lumumba. He was murdered in 1961 by separatist rebels in collusion with Belgian mercenaries.
Also, over 2000 people including 140 ministers of Education have been attending a 3-day Pre Summit of the Transforming Education Summit in the French capital Paris. They are there to draw a roadmap ahead of the main summit at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The co-chair of the summit is Deputy Secretary Amina Mohammed who spoke to the BBC Focus on Africa program.
Plus, the African American singer, R Kelly was sentenced to thirty years in prison. The artist responsible for the hit song ‘I believe I can fly’ was found to have used his fame to sexually abuse women and teenage girls. He also trafficked women between states in America, assisted by members of his entourage over the course of two decades. The Grammy award-winning performer was described as a prolific sexual predator who showed a "callous disregard" for his victims.
