
Nigeria: Zamfara state to allow residents to carry guns to defend themselves
State officials say it’s part of measures to deal with kidnappings and violent attacks.
In Nigeria’s north-western state of Zamfara officials are calling on locals to arm themselves against criminal gangs. They say it’s part of measures to try and deal with the rising numbers of kidnappings and violent gangs. Residents will need to be registered before they can receive a weapon.

And, in Cameroon there are reports that at least 26 people have been killed in an attack on a village in Akwaya in the south-west. It’s a region where the military have been fighting separatist rebels for nearly five years. It isn't yet clear who was behind the violence.
