South Africa: Inventor wins legal battle against mobile phone company

Nkosana Makate invented Vodacom’s “Please Call Me” messaging service

South African inventor Nkosana Makate has won a court battle against Vodacom that entitles him to significantly more than the $3m (£2.3m) compensation offered to him by the telecommunications giant. He described the judgement after a protracted case as “a big relief”.

Ugandan author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, who has accused the authorities of torturing him while he was in detention, has fled the country, his lawyer has confirmed to the BBC.

And the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Uganda to pay DR Congo three hundred and twenty five million dollars in reparations.
