Resident Pianist

Kate Molleson is joined by Clark Tracey to explore the life and work of his father, pianist and composer Stan Tracey. Today following him into the jazz hothouse of Ronnie Scott’s.

This week Kate Molleson explores the life and work of the Godfather of British Jazz: pianist and composer Stan Tracey – in the company of his son, the drummer Clark Tracey.

Today Kate and Clark explore the period in Stan Tracey’s life when he was resident pianist at Ronnie Scott’s club in Soho. It was a gift and a curse, allowing him to play night after night with many of the greats of the jazz world, but after six years the unrelenting pace left him exhausted and addicted. It was in this period that Stan Tracey recorded and released his jazz suite inspired by Dylan Thomas's play-for-voices Under Milk Wood.

Music featured:
Little Malcolm Loves His Dad (from Alfie)
Stompin’ at the Savoy (from Zoot Sims Cookin’)
