The Fix
Two former addicts with criminal pasts run a church in Burnley where people arrive daily looking for help. Can faith, tough love and lived experience change lives?
In a town under real strain, two former addicts with criminal pasts run a church where people arrive daily seeking help with addiction, poverty, homelessness and mental ill health. The film follows Bishop Mick and Pastor Emma as they step into the problems others often walk away from, using their own experiences to try and support people through crisis, recovery and relapse.
At the heart of their work is Exodus, a faith-based recovery programme Emma and Mick have built, based on lived experience. Within this project, they try to offer not just support, but a chance for those struggling with addiction and trauma to turn their lives around.
The church relies on volunteers - often people who have just come through recovery themselves; like local hard man Daz, a semi-pro boxer who struggled for years with addiction until he found God and sobriety. Fresh from the Exodus recovery programme, Daz is considered ready to give back to his community. When not manning the front steps of the church, he can be found helping others as a mentor in the Exodus group. Often he invites in friends and people he knows from the town.
Change however, is rarely straightforward. As people come and go, the film captures the reality of helping those on the edge and explores what happens when a community steps in to support people who feel they have nowhere else to turn. Despite all the challenges, the congregation share warmth and many laughs along the way.
