Operation Warm Welcome?

They risked their lives for British forces in Afghanistan but relocated to Wales under Operation Warm Welcome, these Afghans find themselves facing a different kind of battle.

In 2021, the UK government launched 'Operation Warm Welcome' to support Afghans who assisted UK forces in Afghanistan and risked being targeted by Taliban reprisals. Families evacuated were promised safety, security, and the right to resettle here. But in Wales, where many were temporarily housed in a hotel near Cardiff Airport, their arrival was met not only with support, but also hostility from right wing groups who regularly stage demonstrations. Afghan families see protesters circulating their accommodation, waving flags, and hear chants of "go home", and "terrorists". An Afghan in the hotel asks 'why don't they want us here?'

For the first time, listeners will hear directly from Afghan families themselves - their harrowing stories of escape, their confusion and fear at the protests outside their windows, and their hopes for a better future in the UK.

This is an Inspire Worldwide Media production for BBC Radio Wales.
