Episode 1
In Nepal, a team of film-makers and big cat experts begin an expedition following two tiger mothers and their cubs, on an extraordinary island full of potential dangers.
In the forests of western Nepal, a team of cinematographers, wildlife guides and a big cat scientist are on a mission to document the lives of tigers in more detail than ever before. They’re equipped with the latest drone technology, stabilised zoom lenses and remotely triggered cameras – allowing them to reveal new insights into tigers’ previously hidden lives.
The team focus on two tiger mothers, investigating how these solitary big cats are raising cubs on an island full of dangers, including other tigers, rhinos and elephants. When a new male tiger arrives on the island, older tigress Goma must use all her experience to keep her cubs out of harm’s way, whilst first-time tiger mother Mala struggles to deal with the threat, leaving her three cubs in grave danger.
Meanwhile, the crew’s investigations seem to be revealing that the tigers on Tiger Island are behaving in ways never seen before, as mother tigers appear to be looking after each other’s cubs. This ‘babysitting’ behaviour is at odds with the supposed solitary nature of these big cats.
