PlayStation - May 2026

PlayStation launched its 5th generation of console, the PlayStation 5, in 2020. For the first time, customers could purchase a digital edition of the console, meaning that they would not need to purchase or keep physical games.

However, since then, customers have continually become frustrated that the only way to buy games is to purchase it from the online PlayStation store and feel that they are being overcharged for the digital version of the games, when physical versions are much cheaper.

A £2bn legal case has now been launched by Consumer Journalist Alex Neil, and if successful, Sony may need to pay out its UK customers who have been affected between August 2016 and February 2026.

When we wrote to Sony, it disputed that it is dominant in the market and denied overcharging customers by 20%. It said strong competition from other consoles keeps its digital game prices competitive, adding that allowing third party game stores would make the console less secure and deliver a worse experience for players.
