Symphony – Beethoven And Beyond Ep 2/4

Thursday 10 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

Simon Russell Beale continues his journey into the world of the symphony with an exploration of the revolutionary events of the first half of the 19th century, as the groundbreaking series tracing the story of the symphony and the surprising way in which it has shaped us and our modern world continues.

In Vienna Simon reveals the story of the later symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven and traces their profound impact over the past two centuries. And he learns more about Franz Schubert, whose two greatest symphonies were only discovered after his tragic early death.

Simon then travels to Paris, where the obsessive romantic Hector Berlioz had to virtually invent the modern orchestra in order to play the works he heard in his head. And in Weimar in Germany he visits the sumptuous palace where the flamboyant Franz Liszt was to develop his own unique take – the symphonic poem.

Contributors include broadcaster John Suchet, actor Emma Fielding and composers Anne Dudley and Robert Saxton. The music is conducted by Sir Mark Elder and specially performed by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Hallé.

Further information on Symphony and BBC Four and BBC Radio 3's complementary programming can be found in the press release.

The Slap – Harry Ep 3/8

Thursday 10 November
10.00-10.55pm BBC FOUR

Harry is Hector's cousin, in the latest episode of the drama based on Christos Tsiolkas' best-selling novel. He's a self-made man, a mechanic with his own business, who has the perfect wife, the perfect child, the perfect house by the bay – and who discovers that his aspirational achievements are about to become undone because in a moment of rage he slapped a child.

Harry sees what he did as just: "that spoilt kid deserved it", and the resulting scorn heaped upon him as just more evidence of a world that has lost sight of "what is right and what is wrong". He is most outraged by the charges of assault laid against him by Hugo's parents and fears what this will do to his reputation, his lifestyle and, most importantly, his family.

Harry is played by Alex Dimitriades, Hector by Jonathan La Paglia, Aisha by Sophie Okonedo, Rosie by Melissa George, Anouk by Essie Davis, Connie by Sophie Lowe, Manolis by Lex Marinos and Richie by Blake Davis.
